Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, April 9, 2000 ATTENTION PARENTS & TEACHERS FREE SEMINAR Halton gets funding to promote smoke-free homes Public health departments in Halton, Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area w ill receive $815,661 in provincial funding to promote smoke-free homes. This collaborative campaign, entitled 'Breathing Space,' was created by Halton, Durham, Hamilton, Peel, Toronto, and York health departments to promote a greater understanding of the seriousness of second-hand smoke as a health issue. According to a report in May, 1999 by the Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada, 33% of children under the age of 12 are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke in their homes. "There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, over 40 of which lead to cancer. Second-hand smoke is a serious health hazard, and the risks to children's health from passive smoking are of great concern," says Dr. Robert Nosal, Halton's medical officer of health. "We know that parents are concerned about the health of their children. By participating in campaigns such as 'Breathing Space,' we can inform par ents about the health risks of second-hand smoke and make it easier for them to reduce their children's exposure." The funding is part of $2.3 million being provided by the province to local community agencies and health depart ments across Ontario to combat tobacco use.
