20 Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, April 9, 2000 2001 to celebrate the International Year ofVolunteers N ational Volunteer Week is an annual sevenday celebration honouring Canadian volun teers. In 2001, the entire year w ill be devot ed to volunteerism - around the world. Since 1959, the United Nations has designated international years to draw attention to international issues. With the support of over 100 countries, 2001 was proclaimed International Year of Volunteers (IY V ) in recognition of the contribution of millions of volunteers around the world. IY V is an opportunity to showcase and expand volunteerism. Other international years, such as International Women's Year, International Literacy Year and International Year of Disabled Persons, have had profound impacts in Canada. For example, many of the improvements in building accessibility fof persons with disabilities can be traced back to International Year of Disabled Persons. IY V can make a similar mark at national and global levels. The year w ill provide Canadians, and our more than 175,000 voluntary agencies, with the chance to showcase their strong and proud tradition of volun teering as a fundamental way to contribute to soci ety, as well as to demonstrate what has been achieved through voluntary action. Volunteer Canada and volunteer centres across the country are leading the way in highlighting the positive and cen tral role volunteerism plays in the well-being of any community. IY V will set the tone for a millennium that contin ues Canada's tradition of volunteering. There is much to be proud of, and IY V is the perfect opportunity for celebration!
