The annual w eek is totally paid for and organized by the volunteer Hockey M O M 's organization, and, as is traditional, it brings the M inor O aks H ockey A ssociation (MOHA) house league season to an official close. Some M OHA house league divisions are still in the m idst o f their prelim inary round playoffs which com e to an end this Saturday. The M O M 's w eek then k icks o ff on Sunday and will w rap-up next W ednesday night (the entire schedule is included). It's a busy tim e for these Hockey M O M 's as it's also the tim e o f the year for one of their biggest fundraisers which helps pay the $12,000 ticket for this great w eek o f hockey. T heir annual d in n er/d an ce is on tap Saturday, April 8 at R attlesnake Point golf club. Now, unfortunately, this alw ays popular function is already com pletely sold out. McCusker -----------NO SMOKING December trip to Sydney Iroquois Ridge high school stu dent Connolly Aziz, 17, has earned himself a sailing trip to Sydney this December, but it will be no vacation. Along with his partner, 15-yearold Trevor McEwen of Belleville, the pair have qualified for the W orld Youth Sailing Championships. Last summer, the pair placed sec ond at the Canadian Youth Sailing Championships in Victoria, B.C. Their top-three finish earned them a berth into the M id-W inters West Regatta which was held last weekend (M arch 17-19) in San Diego, California. The pair won the event, not only winning the cham pionship but a spot on the Canadian Youth Sailing Team. The boys warmed up for the regatta by sailing in the MidW inters East Regatta in Sarasota, Florida in February, placing second over all. Aziz and M cEwen have been sail ing together for only one year and have won num erous regattas throughout Canada. These include the Quebec 23-and-under, Ontario 23-and-under and Ontario 18-andunder regattas. Marie. There were eight divisions (U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-19 in both boys and girls) and at the end of the day the Toronto District and Western Ontario were split right down the middle with four divisional championships each, but Western Ontario got the nod in the tiebreaker, which was on games won. Neha Kumar, a 12-year-old Heritage Glen student, playing up a category won the U-15 championship. Kumar is actually the U-12 Canadian national champion and she barely dropped a couple of points in her preliminary round matches against other regions. In the championship match against Michelle Craig of Western Region, she won three straight games. Neha Chawla, an Appleby student, played in the U-13 category and she easi ly won all of her preliminary round matches but lost in the finals, 3-0 to Alisha Turner of Western Region.
