The boys literally flew out o f the gate, dom inating the first period play and it paid off with Charlie Giffin opening up the scoring with an unassisted marker. He was followed m inutes later by Daniel Hannigan-Daley who popped one by the Czech keeper with the help o f Nick Dodge and Charlie Giffin. The tide began to turn in the second period. Chomotov, sensing defeat, came back strong. Matt Pike was stellar in net, having to m ake num erous big saves to hold back the Czech charge. Chom otov finally squeaked one by, bringing the score to 2-1. Oakville, however, restored the tw o goal lead before the second period ended with Giffin notching his second goal, from Daniel Hannigan-Daley and Brett Lain. Giffin was later aw arded player o f the game for his efforts. The team knew the third period was going to be tough with the Czechs' backs up against the wall, and their assumption was correct. Chomotov blew out on to the ice and the pressure was huge. The boys began to play more defensively, straining to hold on to the lead. Chomotov scored half way through the period, narrowing the deficit to 3-2. Then with about a minute remaining, the C zech's pulled their goalie. The puck never left the O akville end and the crease was clogged with white Czech jerseys. With just .2 seconds left on the clock, on a pass from across the net that came in high, Chom otov finally turned on the red light. But Pike was quick to protest the goal. The ref backed off into the com er with the linesmen to make a decision while a hush fell over the Colisee. It seemed to take an hour, then the ref waved off the goal, calling a high stick. The crowd w ent nuts, Chom otov was screaming, but Oakville's 3-2 lead was preserved in a game that literally went down to the last few fractions o f a second. EXHIBITION Oakville tuned up on Saturday with a 3-2 exhibition loss to a team from B.C. It was an odd game. Played in a mall sur rounded by shoppers and scream ing kids riding a rollercoast er, the game was intended to be a bit o f fun before the tourna ment action was to start. O akville looked a little dazed as they ironed out the kinks in their gam e in the close loss. SOCK IT T O `EM Sock it to 'em. T hat's what came to mind when Janice M allough, vicepresident o f sales for Harvey Woods Hoisery Inc. heard that the Oakville Rangers triple-A peewee rep team were going to Quebec City for the prestigious international peewee tourney. So sock it to 'em she did by donating 96 pairs o f sox, em blazoned with the town name, that the team could use in gift exchanges with the other teams. The competition will remember Oakville, and the team mem bers hope that the reason will be two-fold -- an Oakville win and a pair o f sox.
