Red hot Sheridan Bruins win again, in overtime The Sheridan B ruins k ept their im p ressiv e w inning stre a k aliv e Friday night in m en's college b ask et ball action, but they needed overtim e to do it. The tw o-tim e d efending provincial cham pion Bruins w ho now have w on eight in a row to go to 8-2 on the sea son, w ere lucky to sc rap e by the G eorge Brown H uskies, 79-75. The Bruins w ere flat in this one and if it w asn't fo r all-C anadian guard Shane Bascoe, they p robably would have lost it. Bascoe, w ho w as the B ru in 's lone representative at last m o n th 's O ntario college all-star gam e, scored a gam ehigh 29 points, including 10 in over tim e. Sheridan w ent into the half with a com fortable hom e court 34-25 lead but G eorge B row n cam e out on fire in the second h alf w ith a 14-4 run to take a 41-40 lead w ith 12 m inutes left. T his allow ed the B ruins to roll the ball up to half court w ithout taking any tim e off the clock. Bascoe took the ball and penetrat ed into the zone fo r an uncontested lay-up w ith a second to play. "It w as like a parting o f the Red Sea," said B ruins assistant coach N ick Davis. In o v ertim e, the B ruins finally show ed som e life and w ent on an 112 run to take control and held on to win it. "We w ere really flat," said D avis. "C hris C oote kept us in it in the first h alf -- 4 points, 6 rebounds (four offensive), three steals. "R icardo Edw ards helped keep us in it in the second h alf -- 10 second half rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 steals. "A nd Shane took o ver in over tim e." D ion H orsford led G eorge Brow n w ith 19 points. Sheridan is at S eneca this Friday, 8 p.m . final insurance goal by Stu M acCrim mon into an em pty net. "We need to go one shift at a time." W hile pleased with how the team is carrying out the game plan, he's far from complacent. He felt that his team did not play as well as they could, although they did turn it on to win the game. He feels his team has not been as physical as they were down the stretch. Oakville opened the scoring, then fell behind 2-1, the only time they would be down in the game. Oakville evened the score and then went ahead 3-2 only to have Georgetown muster their last marker to tie it at 3-3. Prior to pocketing their em pty netter with three seconds remaining, it was nailbiting time for Oakville as a late penalty on Jason Sajko gave Georgetown the extra man which they augmented by pulling their goalie. Oakville's offence came from M ike Tarantino, who had three goals, con tinuing his hot streak early in this series, with single markers added *by M ike Lukajic and Stu MacCrimmon. Assists were from Bob Jaggard (3), M ike P orter (2), L ukajic and Tarantino. Georgetown had goals from Ryan Fairbam , Bob L aR ose, and Stace Page. Helpers came from Jeff Seeds, A dam Bertoli, Justin H ebst, Scott M acDonald, and Tristan Fairbam. SATURDAY'S 6-5 OT WIN For m ost o f Saturday's series open er in Georgetown, it looked like the regular season pattern (in w hich Georgetown went undefeated against the Blades with four wins and two ties) would be repeated. W ith a modest 2-1 lead after the first period, Georgetown twice went on to build up three-goal leads. T hey scored tw o shorthanded markers on the same penalty to build a 4-1 lead in the second period. The Blades got one back, fittingly also while shorthanded, to make it 4-2 at the end of two periods. Georgetown regained their threegoal lead at 5-2 in the third period, seemingly to put the game out of reach. But the Blades mounted an impres sive com eback tying it up at 5-5 in reg ulation and then winning 6-5 in over time -- their only lead o f the game. Oakville almost com pleted the win in regulation time, only to have the would-be winner hit the post. D ow n 5-2 in the third period, M ike Tarantino started the com eback on a pow er play goal to narrow the margin to 5-3. Less than a minute later, also on the pow er play, Perry Ryerson skated through the Raiders' defence and beat Georgetown goalie Jeff H ladysh who was also injured on the play and had to be replaced by Darren McConaghy. A mere 44 seconds later, the Blades tied the game, when Stu M acCrim m on added his second o f the gam e when he one-tim ed a nice cross pass from Ryerson. "It's all about opportunities," said coach Anderson, who celebrated his first win against his form er team this season. `T h e guys that are supposed to step up, stepped up." Anderson was let go by the Raiders before Christm as and was soon picked up by the Blades w hom he had previ ously coached.
