The two-time provincial junior championship team departs for Moncton this week to compete in their second Karcher junior nationals. Oakville United won a nailbiting overtime shootout over Glen Shields this past weekend in the U-19 boys final at the Ontario Soccer A ssociation's Coffee Time Soccer Centre in Vaughan. Glen Shields opened the scoring and Jason Lyall evened it up for Oakville. Lyall's goal with four minutes to play in the semifinal game stood up in a 3-2 win over Scarborough Wexford Warriors. Oakville had built up a 2-0 first half lead on goals by Isaac Youssef and Lyall. Scarborough came on strong in the second half, tying the game up with just over seven minutes remaining. From that point, both teams fought hard for the go-ahead goal. Oakville finished atop its group to earn a spot in the semifinals. O akville's John Base will not be going to his ninth N okia Cup provincial m en 's curling cham pi onship this year. The veteran Oakville curler, a former junior world champion who last year made it out of the Nokia Cup preliminary round into a semifinal tiebreaker before being ousted, did not make it out o f the tough chal lenge cup round this past weekend. The last chance qualifier is alw ays a tough route to travel with only one o f 16 teams qualifying to the N okia Cup. Base has done it before, but this year the sur vivor o f the arduous com petition was Kevin B reivik's St. Thom as rink. Base won his opener 6-5 over Ron Lobel from Thornhill and then lost 7-6 to Ken A rm strong of M ilton, putting him over to the B-pool. Base kept alive w ith an 8-3 win over Dale Kelly o f the Forrest C urling Club but was then ousted with an 8-5 loss to N ick Rizzo o f Brant. GARDENS TRIUMPH: the Red Lobster Vikings minor peewee team helped make Oakville a perfect three-for-three in the prestigious Nike/NHL tourney which wrapped up Saturday at venerable Maple Leaf Gardens. They scored curling's hole in One Many sports fans are familiar with a `holein-one' in golf. Well, curling has its own equivalent, a hardto-get eight ender, meaning that all eight rocks count towards the score. In a recent mixed game, Gord Parker's team consisting o f Wendy Parker (third), Joe McAuley (second) and Mary Jane McAuley (lead) scored an eight ender in the third end of their game.
