We can't all look like ShaniaTwain, but feeling like a woman is as easy as a visit to Couture Lingerie in downtown Oakville. This small gem of a shop, tucked away behind Cultures on Lakeshore Road at Reynolds, is home to some very exclusive European designer labels. Owner Rosa Dominguez says she designed her shop to have a sophisticated, European appeal, a place where women of all ages and sizes can treat themselves to something special. Above all, she wanted to avoid the garish colours and tacky images sometimes associated with the lingerie business. To that end, the shop has been bathed in soft colours, with gentle lighting and generous bou quets of elegant long-stemmed roses, delivered weekly. But the true selling point, of course, is the lin gerie itself which Dominguez has selected for its comfort as well as its beauty. "It has to do both," she insists. "It has to look good and give you an attitude that says "I feel like Business & Arts entries sought The Oakville Arts Council (OAC) is looking for nominations by arts groups for the 2000 Mayor's Awards for Business and the Arts, in honour of the creative partnerships between the arts and business communities. The Awards, now in its 11th year, recognize a `Rising Star', `Runner-Up' and `W inner' in each category. The awards are commissioned by CIBC and created by students at Sheridan College's School of Crafts and Design. Nomination forms may be picked up at the Oakville Arts Council, located on the second floor of the Central Branch of the Oakville Public Library, 120 Navy Street. Nominations must be returned to the OAC by Wed. March 1st at 4 p.m. a woman". But it must feel good as well." With Valentine's Day approaching, Dominguez is preparing for the onslaught of husbands and boyfriends who want to choose something special for the woman in their lives. She has one piece of advice for them: know the proper sizes before you start shopping. In her experience, she has found that men tend to select items that they would like their partners to wear, rather than going for something the woman would be likely to choose for herself. So men, be warned. You may be drawn to that lacy little thong, but the woman in your life might have something a little more modest in mind. * Dominguez says she's a firm believer in women treating themselves to beautiful pieces of lingerie. "You don't have to buy it to please someone else. Do it for yourself, to make yourself feel spe cial." Certainly, there are enough unique and beauti ful designs to appeal to a wide range of ages and tastes, from the cozy flannels to the sheer and lacy, to youthful, seamless Spandex. Many of Couture's exclusive labels such as Ravage, Aubade and Rochas from France, Cosabella from Italy, Eda from England and Flora Nikrooz from the U.S., to name a few, come with the kind of high-end price tag that attaches itself to fine silks, laces and finely embroidered undergar ments. The Ravage line for instance, which Dominguez says never goes on sale, features a $285 bra which sold out completely in a short period of time. Regardless of whether your budget allows for a $10 panty or a $200 pyjama set, Dominguez says everyone can expect the same attentive service and attention to detail. That includes a seating area and coffee where men can wait comfortably and Couture's special, gift-wrapped boxes, tied with beautiful tulle bows and tiny lavender sachets. The shop also carries a selection of fine French soaps and bath salts, as well as personalized gift baskets photo by Barrie Erskine Rosa Dominguez and products for pampering at Couture Lingerie.
