No. 4 ADDRESSES JAY CEES Speaking of the opportunity members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce had available to them in community work, John Sheppard, of London, national president of the organization, called upon Nipigon members to always remember they were Canadians first and to take advantage of the heritage which Canadians enjoy. He was speaking at a banquet held in his honor at the Normandie Hotel on Tuesday evening. Mr. Sheppard is on the last lap of a tour of the Dominion and the U.S. visiting Jay Cee organizations. Kenneth Mclnnis, of Kenora, President of Region IV, of the Junior Chambers of Commerce, also spoke. Russ Hallonquist, vice-president of the Nipigon Chamber, was chairman, in the absence of Milton Dashney, who was unable to be present. In his inspirational message message, Mr. Sheppard spoke of leadership training, development of a sense of civic consciousness, development of a vigorous Canadian national spirit and fellowship among Jay Cees. ‘Canada is crying for leaders today,' he said. ‘In the not too distant future we will be called upon.' Mr. Sheppard said Junior Chamber work was helping members to think a little clearer, to make sounder judgments. If the members could not get across their ideas at meetings, they were not aiding the organization, he stated. He stressed that each chamber should do its work for the community, not for an individual or a faction. There were too many groups today aimed at splitting the community. In health services it did not matter whether the cause was for Jew or Gentile; in community beautification it mattered not whether it was for Catholic or Protestant. The national leader urged members to develop a sense of civic interest in their local government. He cautioned them, however, not to back an individual or party. Mr. Sheppard was introduced to the meeting by Mr. Mclnnis, who also spoke briefly and told the gathering that the problems they contend with every day are the problems of all such organizations, but that with the co-operation of all members these can be overcome easily. Among those present at the dinner were A. Guger, and J. H. McLellan, members of the Red Rock Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Sheppard and Mr. Mcinnis, who arrived on the Tuesday morning train from the Lake-head, were taken on a tour of district points of interest during the day, and were entertained at a luncheon at Red Rock, following an inspection of the Brompton plant. APPLE DAY PROCEEDS A sum of $36.60 was raised to aid the Nipigon Wolf Cubs in their work, through the sale of apples on Nipigon streets Saturday, October 16th, it has been announced by Cubmaster Doug Henderson. Nipigon, Ontario, Thursday, October 20, 1949 LOSES LICENCE As the result of a conviction registered against him late in August for illegal possession of liquor, taxi-driver Louis Berube had his licences cancelled by the Municipality at the regular meeting of council held October 12th. Mr. Berube was charged by O.P.P. officers at Pine Portage following discovery of two unopened bottles of liquor in his vehicle. He was fined $200 and costs. A letter from Provincial Constable D. Whittaker, of Nipigon, was read at the meeting by Clerk W. L. Wade. 'No report of this thing was to have been made,’ said Berube. 'If I had known then what I know now I would not have pleaded guilty. The liquor was bought on my permit. My only offence was in not removing it from my car. There is dirty work going on somewhere and I intend to find out about it.' The taxi-driver had attended the meeting in an attempt to explain to council that, he had not knowingly committed an offence. However, council informed him they had no alternative but to cancel his taxi licence as a conviction had been registered. ‘It does not matter what the offence is,’ Reeve Swain pointed out. 'We made that ruling and we are obliged to abide by it.' He said that if Berube uncovered any alleged ‘dirty work' council would be grateful for the information. EDITOR ERRS Although it wps not quite so serious as it might have been, a lot of Nipigon youngsters may have had a holiday last Friday and could have put the blame on the editor. Following the appearance of the paper last week, Principal George O'Neill received a barrage of telephone calls from teachers, students and parents inquiring about the teachers' convention which The News had announced was being held at the weekend. It turned out that the editor had been a week premature in reporting the convention would be held. There were a lot of disappointed public school students, no doubt, but they are getting the holiday this week instead. The convention is being held this weekend at the Lakehead. Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Dampier, who were married in the Church of the Annunciation, August 22nd. in a pretty ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Gaudette, of Toronto, and the late Mr. A.
