www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 17, 2015 | 44 White collar crime and punishment topic of Cdn. Club meeting The topic of the Canadian Club of Halton Peel's next dinner event will deal with White Collar Crime and Punishment. Anita Anand, professor of law and academic director at the Centre for the Legal Profession and the Program on Ethics in Law and Business at the University of Toronto, is the guest speaker for the event slated for Thursday, Sept. 24. "About 50 per cent of Canadians hold securities outside an RRSP or similar pension plan. This means that they, as investors, are exposed," stated a media release. "Who protects their interests? What penalties may be imposed on those who break the law? Is jail time an option? What compensation is available for investors?" the release stated. Anand will address those questions in her presentation on investors' rights, along with a review of the legal framework in place to deal with "white-collar crime." She will also discuss several infamous criminals. Before joining the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2006, Anand was an associate professor at Queen's Law School where she received the Queen's Law Students' Society Award for Excellence in Teaching. Anand's appointments also include: Howe Institute Fellow-inResidence and board member of Oakville Hydro; the Oakville Hospital Foundation; and St. Mildred'sLightbourn School. She was also the inaugural chair of the Ontario Securities Commission's Investor Advisory Panel (from 2010-12). Registration for the dinner and a cash bar opens at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and speaker from 7-9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for members, $45 for non-members and $20 for students.
