They'll be among 46 places that include heritage sites, architectural significant buildings and places of worship taking part in Doors Open Halton from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (with some exceptions). Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the communities of Oakville and Burlington on the Saturday and Milton and Halton Hills on Sunday to discover the rich heritage, cultural diversity and natural beauty each boasts. "History isn't all within the museums," said Town of Oakville Museum Recreation and Culture Supervisor Bill Nesbitt, who is part of a regional committee organizing the event. "Our heritage and culture is throughout our entire community and that's something in Halton we're so lucky for. There's so much heritage all around us it can be part of our everyday lives if we have that consciousness." In Oakville, the free event will include a walking tour departing from Towne Square led by Oakville Historical Society volunteers. Older homes, like the Palermo Schoolhouse on Dundas Street West, Sovereign House on West River Street and the Merrick Thomas House in Lakeside Park on Navy Street, will also welcome guests. The one-and-ahalf-storey clapboard structure with saltbox roofline, typical of its period, is constructed of white pine logs squared into 12-inch-by-12- inch timbers on a fieldstone foundation. Nesbitt said structures like the Schooner Anitra will give visitors a unique perspective of Halton's social fabric. Designed by Montye Macrae and built in Hamilton in 1926, the wooden schooner is known as the Queen of Lake Ontario. Visitors are welcome to come aboard the boat on Water Street in Oakville and discover the joys of sailing and racing, and see how the Anitra was constructed. Doors Open Halton also includes some new additions, including the Lyon's Log Cabin, TransCanada's Halton Hills Energy Generating Station and the Mattamy National Cycling Centre. The log cabin, which was constructed circa 1820, was recently extensively restored by the Town of Oakville.
