www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 10, 2015 | 16 Summer one of discovery of drinks, bands and books continued from p.15 quently spent glorious nights on that little bistro's patio getting caught up with friends. A buddy introduced us to the perfect summer cocktail, and around the Juniper Compound, it became The Summer Of The Negroni (equal parts red vermouth, Campari and gin, on the rocks). Also, over the course of the summer, I discovered -- as I'm always trying to discover -- new bands. Every summer needs a soundtrack. This was the summer of the dogs: excellent albums by (and I'm not making this up) Houndstooth, Palehound, and Houndmouth, with their killer single Sedona. On the drive to discover the beauty of La Malbaie, Que., my wife talked of a radio interview she heard with comedian Colin Quinn, discussing a novel he said changed his life -- indeed, actually saved his life. She couldn't recall the book's name, and she'd given me precious little to go on: it was a funny book, it's considered a classic by some, and it saved Colin Quinn. I took a wild guess (I mean, there are only a million books out there that t the clues): "A Confederacy of Dunces?" She stared at me, stunned: "That's it." So, we stopped at the next city, found a bookstore, and bought a copy. It became the big book- nd of the summer. What a riveting read, what a rare romp -- undermined only by the fact that the author, John Kennedy Toole, had committed suicide 11 years before the novel found a publisher. And on that sad, sobering note, we say, `solong' to the summer of 2015, and begin prepping for what we hope will be an awesome autumn. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www. facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www. twitter.com/thesportjesters.
