- "Last week I saw a sure sign of spring. No, it wasn't buds or blossoms. They could be wrong. It was a group of boys playing marbles. I figure it must be an instinct. In spring, birds fly north, mothers clean houses and small boys play marbles. When I was a boy, we called them alleys. Every spring, as regular as clockwork, we got out our alleys."
