He later moved to Oakville, as a child with his family, where he resided for the rest of his life. While attending school at SS No. 7, Dad would walk to school every morning and said hello to a local farmer whose name was Sam Franks. Roy was a proud member of RCL Branch #114 (70 years) and served in many roles including President. He has many fond memories involving the Legion. Like everyone growing up in Oakville, Dad started his working career at the Basket Factory. This was interrupted when he signed up (September 1939) to serve his country (1940-1945). Dad was wounded and taken prisoner of war in the raid on Dieppe and remained a POW until the end of the war. Upon returning from the war, Dad met Mom and later married (September 1948). They lived in a 2 room shack while Dad and his brothers-in-law (Bill and Pat Mackie) built the only home they had. He worked at Barringham Rubber, later called Monsanto, and part-time driving cab at night, and on weekends he worked at the Breweries Retail to make ends meet. He later worked at Allen's Industry in Hamilton where he finished his working career. Dad was also a very proud member of the Oakville Fire Department as a volunteer for 20 years (1961-1981) retiring with the rank of Deputy Chief. Dad enjoyed many years involved in baseball, first playing with the Kerr Street Merchants, later coaching his kids, followed by umpiring and then coaching the Legion ball club where he had many happy memories. To Bill Merritt, thank you for being such a good friend and we know Dad had many fond memories from baseball, snooker and following the Oakville Blades hockey team. Billie passed away at the Oakville Hospital surrounded by the love of her family. Billie often stated that she felt that she had lived in the most exciting time in history. She shared much of that time with her husband of almost 50 years, J.W. "Bill" Carroll. Bill and Billie were a true partnership in every sense of the word. They started Oakville Custom Pools on Speers Road in 1957 and through that business met some of Oakville's most colourful characters. Billie trained as a nurse at St. Joseph's in Toronto and after leaving nursing to raise her family she did a great deal of volunteer work to give back to the town she loved. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church and appreciated her loyal friends there, particularly, Marianne Hallford. Billie had the soul of an adventurer and was fortunate to share that trait with her three sisters, who were her frequent travel companions. Although too many to mention, her trip highlights included South Africa, New Zealand, India, the Galapagos Islands, and her personal favourite, Tibet. Billie is predeceased by her husband, Bill, her daughter Trixie and her granddaughter Pattie. She will be sadly missed by her children Jim (Velma), Mike (Sue), Austin (Linda), Kathi and Rob (Tammy). Beloved grandmother to Bill (Diane), Gord (Laina), Cindy (Tim), Wendy (Airton), Stacey (Andrew), Brian (Paige), Patrick (Tamara), Marisa (Jason), Kelly and Jessica. Loving great-grandmother to Ben, Nick, Kayley, Jessica, Josie, Jacob, Austin, Alex and Connor. Loving sister to Beatrice Wilson. A private family celebration of life will take place at a later date. l Novenas PRAYER TO ST. JUDE.
