Burlington is up first for the torch trek, on Friday, June 19, followed on Tuesday, June 23 by separate relays the same day in Oakville and Milton. The Pan Am Games Torch Relay began May 30 with the arrival ceremony in Toronto. The torch will make its way to more than 130 communities over 41 days until July 10, when it will be used to light the cauldron at the opening ceremonies of the Pan Am Games in Toronto. The torch relay involves 3,000 torchbearers travelling 5,000-plus kilometres on the road. The torch will travel all over Ontario with oneday stops in Nova Scotia, Québec, B.C. and Manitoba, along the way. The relay route will go through Burlington on June 19 on its way to Niagara Falls before coming back through Oakville and Milton on June 23. Other highlights of the torch relay include visits to six Canadian Forces Bases, a national and provincial park, five First Nations communities and five national historic sites. The torch also will be present at Canada Day festivities on Parliament Hill July 1 in Ottawa. The following is a synopsis of Pan Am torch relay events for Halton: Lynn Petruskavich The Pan Am Games features 49 sports and several thousand athletes from 41 countries in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. It will run from July 10-26. Milton's new velodrome is hosting the Pan Am indoor cycling competition while the town is also staging individual time trials on a rural roads course. Burlington's City View Park and its three artificial turf fields is the site for Pan Am Games teams' soccer practices. The actual soccer Jon Kuiperij competition will be held at the new Tim Horton's Field in Hamilton. The 16-sport Parapan Am Games for the physically challenged are from Aug. 7-15. Mayor Rick Goldring will bring greetings from the city and Pan Am officials will speak. The community torchbearer for Burlington is Dr. Ashley Worobec. She will be one of the torchbearers that brings the flame into Spencer Smith Park.
