Firefighters prepare to defend title The Oakville Fire Department's Auto Extrication Team (AET) asked the public for help last Saturday outside the Real Canadian Superstore on Oak Park Boulevard -- and got it. Team members, joined by college students in firefighter programs, got right to the job at hand and had washed dozens of cars by mid-morning. They even used Ladder 262 to do the rinsing -- much to the delight of the vehicle occupants. The event raised funds as the team hopes to earn enough to go the North American Vehicle Rescue Challenge in New York State, hosted by the Hagerman Fire Department. The Oakville Fire Department is hoping to send two teams, a total of nine team members, to defend their title as last year's champions. The challenge runs from Sept. 8-12 and tests the skills of auto extrication teams from across North America and Europe. The team's job is to get injured people out of crashed vehicles so the injured persons can receive lifesaving care.
