New federal Oakville-North Burlington Police launch vulnerable persons registry riding has a Conservative candidate by Michael Gregory Metroland Media Group 17 | Friday, June 12, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The former CEO and president of Save the Children Canada, Effie Triantafilopoulos was nominated over the weekend as the federal Conservative candidate for Oakville-North Burlington. Triantafilopoulos said she recently moved to the riding from Mississauga and has previously held positions as chief of staff to three federal ministers. In the Oct. 27 federal election, she will faceoff against Oakville Ward 2 Town Councillor and Liberal candidate Pam Damoff, the NDP's Rebecca Rajcak, the Green Party's Adnan Shahbaz and the Libertarian Party's David Clement. Burlington Ward 6 Councillor Blair Lancaster was the only other contender on the ballot to become the first Conservative nomination in the new riding. Triantafilopoulos ran unsuccessfully as the Progressive Conservative candidate for Mississauga South in the 2014 Ontario general election. A bitter nomination battle between Mississauga-Brampton South MP Eve Adams and rival Natalia Lishchyna helped to put Oakville-North Burlington on the map last Halton police announced this week they are launching an online Vulnerable Person Registry. This launch expands the autism online registry, which was launched in October 2014 and its subsequent expansion to include other vulnerable groups. That registry was created with the intention of allowing police to provide better service to the community by ensuring frontline officers had access to vital information when responding to calls involving people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The registry has been expanded to other vulnerable groups. This new online voluntary Vulnerable Person Registry will provide Halton police with emergency contact information, detailed physical descriptions, known routines and the special needs of registered people. The information is intended to assist officers in communicating with, attending a residence of or dealing with an emergency involving vulnerable individuals. Police define a vulnerable person as someone who due to a medical, mental health or physical condition, may exhibit patterns of behavior that may pose a danger to themselves or others. This could include: an inclination to wander, the inability to communicate, fascinations or attractions (water, construction sites, etc.) and social responses (fear of strangers, aggression). Examples of vulnerable people may include people with: Alzheimer's disease, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Acquired Brain Injury or a mental condition that causes a person to exhibit the previously discussed behaviours. Both women eventually withdrew from the race -- Adams citing a slowed recovery from a concussion she suffered as a result of a fall. Lishchyna is now running in a byelection for Oakville's local Ward 6 council seat, previously held by the late Max Khan. Adams crossed the floor to join the Liberal ranks in February and is seeking the nomination in Eglinton-Lawrence.
