ARS&UFE Proposed monu Time Capsules are gems of information extract- ed from past issues of the Champion and other publications in order ta provide a window into Milton's past. March 1920 At Monday evening's meeting of the town council the reeve introduced a motion to consider taking action in connection with the proposed monument to the memory of sol- diers from the Milton neighborhood who fell in the Great War. He did so on account of the failure of the com- mittee of citizens to report after having the matter in hand for more than a year. But as the committee has not been dis- charged the council, on motion by the mayor, deferred action for the present. The committee's delay has been due to dis- agreement. The majority of its members fa- vored a monument, but a minority stood out for a hospital. The relatives of th* len were canvassed and were reported to be unanimous in desiring a monument but though their wishes should nent issue surfaces have carried great weight, they did not influ- ence the advocates of the hospital who con- tinued their opposition. But for this, the monument might have been erected last year. It is high time for the committee to get to- gether again, come to an agreement and re- port or dissolve, so that the council may be free to act. From the first the Champion has taken the ground that the most fitting memorial would be a monument that future generations would never misunderstand its meaning and that within a few years a so-called memorial building would be meaningless. Having bought Wm. Galloway's brick dwell- ing on Court Street, W.H. Stewart, Inspector Children's Aid Society, will move from Acton to Milton.
