The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 3, 2003 - C3 Dozen local churches offer Alpha courses Young, old, rich, poor, western and eastern Canadians are invited to dinner this month as Alpha Canada launches a nationwide initiative to explore the meaning of life through a 10-week course. "Canadians are reaching out to other Canadians, allowing them to explore the concepts of the Christian faith and the meaning for life," said Sally Start. National Director of Alpha Canada. "This invitation to the nation will allow Canadians from all walks of life, all manner of faith or non-faith back grounds, and all parts of the country to ask questions and investigate issues of faith for themselves," she said. Existing denominational walls will fall as at least a dozen churches in Oakville unite for this course including Anglican. Baptist. Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Pentecostal and others. Dinners form an essential and muchenjoyed focus of the Alpha Course, lead ing to the national invitation. To date, more than 2,000 churches across Canada are cooking up unique opportunities to attract community attention to the Christian faith. For example, in Toronto, an Alpha course will be held in a popular pub. Oakville churches will be inviting neighbours through personal invitations, banners, and billboards to an Alpha sup per. The Alpha supper includes a half hour video tided Christianity: Boring, Irrelevant and Untrue? Hosted by for mer Alpha students, this will be an opportunity for guests to sample Alpha with absolutely no pressure to register. `T h e non-threatening, small group nature of the Alpha course allows com plete freedom for participants to ask questions and delve into the issues with no negative feedback." said Start. "We want to make the church rele vant to those who have no background in Christianity or who have had a negative experience with the faith." Alpha suppers will be held in Oakville and across Canada starting Sept. 15. Alpha courses will be offered at St. Sim on's Anglican Church, Oakridge Bible Chapel, The King's Family Church, St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, The Sanctuary, Burloak Christian Fellowship, Hopedale Presbyterian Church, St. Hilda's Anglican Church, St. James Roman Catholic Church, Chartwell Baptist Church, Knox Presbyterian Church and St. Cuthbert's Anglican Church Alpha Canada is headquartered in Vancouver, BC. Alpha courses are taught across Canada in churches and non-traditional settings such as prisons, schools, college campuses, businesses and pubs. There will be an Alpha prayer meet ing on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 7-8 p.m. at Hopedale Presbyterian Church, hosted by the 12 local churches that are offering the Alpha Course this fall or winter. Everyone is welcome. For more information, call Bronwen Bruch at 905-842-0630 or e-mail her at bbmch3 @cogeco.ca.
