www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, April 17, 2015 | 10 A L L OUT CLEARANCE EVENT APRIL 2 - 29, 2015 15% INSTANT SAVINGS* on the purchase of ALL qualifying KitchenAid® Major Appliances** Breakfast club now serves 200 students continued from p.8 The event was part of National Volunteer Week April 12-18 to recognize and celebrate Canada's dedicated volunteers. "I was very surprised when I found out about the award. I was very excited to be recognized for all the work that we've done at the program. I'm honoured to be awarded the medal," said Rondeau, on receiving the accolade. With assistance from parents and funding from Halton Food For Thought (HFFT), the T.A. Blakelock Breakfast Club was launched in 2009. During the first two years, the club fed up to 80 students every morning, but now it serves more than 200 students daily with the help of volunteers, according to Rondeau. The program provides food and drinks to students at no charge. Rondeau said none of the program's success would be possible without the dedication of Heather Arbuckle -- who has been volunteering daily for years -- and its weekly volunteers. From 7:30-8:10 a.m., Monday-Friday, Rondeau and Arbuckle, along with other volunteers, serve bagels, fruit, yogurt, cereal, juice and water, among other items. They also host themed breakfasts and fundraisers such as a pancake day and smoothie day. As a volunteer at the breakfast club, Rondeau enjoys coming to school before it starts and seeing "the difference we make in the lives of students who may not otherwise eat breakfast in the morning," he said. "For all of the time that I've been volunteering at the breakfast club, I've really, really enjoyed it. I find it to be so fun and enriching every day. It's something that I really love to do," said Rondeau. Most of its funding comes from HFFT -- a charity that organizes breakfast, snack and lunch programs, serving more than 12,000 Halton students a week. It also relies on community sponsors and donations to keep it operational. It received a $5,000 corporate contribution in 2014 to help offset the cost of running the club, which is about $16,000 annually, Rondeau told the Oakville Beaver in December 2014. He also recruits new student volunteers every year and converses with parents and community organizations to raise funds, so the club can continue and remain free for the students who need it. "It really is an enjoyable place to be. It's a positive atmosphere," said Rondeau. Best Performing Dishwasher Brand KitchenAid® Standard-Depth French Door Refrigerator - 25 cu. ft.
