New Mazda 6 brings out big guns to attract midsize buyers Mazda, which has come zoom zooming out o f its self-made doldrums in the 1990s, is about to level its biggest gun yet in the battle to attract midsize buyers. Thanks to the styling trend already established w ith the MPV and the Protege, the Mazda6 w ill not be confused in terms of looks w ith the modest styling of the Camry and yesterland looks o f the Accord. Initially available as a four-dooi sedan in the fall, and to be followed by a five-door hatch, the car w ill be offered w ith a brand-new, 2.3-litre DOHC inline four-cylinder producing 150 hp and 152 lb/ft of torque. By the end o f the year, the car w ill also be available w ith a 3.0-litre V6 producing 219 hp and 202 lb/ft of torque. Based on Ford Duratec architecture, the engine has been modified by Mazda. Both cars w ill be available w ith a four-speed automatic and a five-speed Mazda has developed a new independent, self-levelling suspension system th a t uses ultra compact coil springs. The result is no shock towers protruding up into the cargo and back seat area restricting width. In the trunk area, the sedan floor is a full 40 inches (1,016 mm) wide and offers no less than 500 litres (17.6 cut. f t ) of cargo space. But fo r a rather large person like myself, the payoff comes in 1,395 mm (54.5 inches) of rear shoulder room and 942 mm (37.1 inches) o f rear headroom and this is in a car th a t is only 1,440 mm (56.7 inches) high. For the driver, seat comfort means countless different contours were tried until one was selected th a t offered support, but not at the expense of fatigue. The main instruments are set in a nononsense semi-circular binnacle w ith speedo and tach dominating, fuel and temp much smaller and set to each side o f the mains. The centre console stack is done in a non-glare alloy-look w ith audio controls set in the centre and three rotary knobs fo r heating and air placed lower. Air conditioning w ill be standard across the line in Canada. The Mazda6 w ill be available in January as an 2004 model, w ith prices starting from $24,295 to $34,000.
