AM Many reasons to go skiing By WERNER BERGEN Examiner Sports Editor Why do people ski crosscountry According to George Manning past president of the Bar rie Crosscountry Ski Club there are million reasons Manning said it was one of the fastest growing sports in Canada and for good reason Some people like it for the fresh air and some for the exerCise Manning said If youre going to live in this crazy climate you might as well enjoy it Manning said Its fun Manning said it has been proven that crosscountry ski ing ranks second only to swimming in giving total exer Cise to the legs back arms and cardiovascular muscles Exercise is probably one of the biggest features in the sport But more important people who actively par tiCipate in skiing get their exercise without really realiz ing it Sure the arms and legs get sore after day on the trails but while enjoying the scenery and the fresh air one doesnt realize how strenuous it can be Crosscountry skiing can be as difficult or as easy as person wants it to be In the Barrie area there are trails that will challenge Olympic competitors and there are also trails for the novice skier or for those who just want to take it easy Another aspect of skiing that those participating enjoy is that it is something the whole family can take part in George Stroempl member of the Barrie club ran in the Skylon Marathon this fall Stroempl is over 50 years old and runs in the summer to stay in shape for the winter skiing season Evelyn Dusome president of the Barrie Crosscountry Ski Club said skiing is an opportunity for people to get out of their regular activities and enjoy themselves Many skiers start crosscountry skiing because the idea of the sport intrigues them Gliding over the snow that creates havoc with motorists is almost like thumbing ones nose at mans technical advances Lets face it so many of us are dependant on the car for work and recreation We must drive the car to work we it to go on vacations to get away from our every day But because we live in Ontario snow is an occupational hazard Just look what snow storm does to Highway 400 Traffic is slowed down or even stopped cars get into ac cidents or spin off the road When the highway is closed because of the storm trouble develops People going to and from work get stranded Crosscountry skiing gets better with more snow 11 is relatively easy to learn but difficult to master so there is always challenge to it While people in cars are spinning at intersections and having trouble going up hills skiers are cruising along with effortless ease Well perhaps it is all too idealistic but it does get the point across There are two good sets of trails in Barrie One belongs to the Barrie Crosscountry Ski Club at Sunnidale Com munity Park and the other at Molsons Park Both have trails for the expert and the novice skiers and fokr those in between As the saying goes Try it youll li eit There are other winter sports facilities that the im mediate area has to offer There are excellent downhill ski resorts snowmobile trails and lot of beautiful country to go snowshoeing in No longer is winter something that has to be endured between fall and spring Winter sports opens up whole new set of recreational experiences Since we will always get winter why shouldnt we make an attempt to enoy it After all winter is more than just having to shovel your
