parents Dear Ann In the last four years our only daughter age 21 has been strung out on drugs She has run away tw1ce The last time to Mexico We flew down and brought her home when she became seriously ill She has dropped out of school three times had an abortion and has been sexually promiscuous with three other men This week she decided to live openly with man she met recently The fellow has never dated girl before and just spent $3000 of his savings to pay off her car debt and other overdue bills She has fulltimejob We did not bring her up to behave this way She had hap py childhood Christian upbringing and loving parents We stopped giving her money so now is angry and refuses to speak to us What happened to the biblical adage Train up child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it We need some counsel Battered Parems Dear Parents Many children depart from the way they were trained up and there is no pat explanation Peer pressure and an overwhelming need to rebel against authority are just two factors that may account for your daughters behavior My advice to parents who are faced with such problems is this Investigate the availability of counselling and suggest it There are many drug abuse clinics and mental health centres that do fine job If she refuses drop the matter Stop giving money or gifts Let her know the door is open but make no effort to repair the rupture in the relationship If your daughter is angry let her stay angry In other words let her alone to grow up and shape up if and when she chooses It wont be easy but its the only way to go Dear Ann How does one collect from house guests who make longdistance telephone calls and take their own sweet time about paying up just managed to collect sizable sum from woman who stayed with me during the Labor Day weekend Shell be back for Thanksgiving have telephone credit card and wouldnt think of charging longdistance call to host or hostess Please reply in print for whole group of us who are your faithful rea ersinSan Bernardino Dear Faithfuls Most people who complain to me about this problem never get paid Your concern is that your frien ds dont pay up soon enough Short of telling the offenders flat out that they are not at liberty to make longdistance calls on your phone your only option is to install pay phone booth la Paul Getty Make joke of it but theyll get the message Dear Ann Landers What can do about neighbor who inSists on bringing over all the food she wants to dispose of realize she is trying to be nice but resent her presen ting me with leftovers slightly stale bakery goods and wilted vegetables and fruit We are not in need of anything and have told her so many times but she refuses to take no for an answer Any suggestions Not Grateful Dear Not The woman is com ulsive giver and you cant do much about her neurosis Throw out the stale and wilted stuff and give the rest to someone who needs it Iflhnn microphone is likeapoliceman beat The special 45 rpm lovely embroidered linen tablecloth and have not laundered it as am waiting for you to tell me how to remove them HELEN DEAR HELEN The foilwoing method for removing candle wax is recommended by the Soap and Detergent association Scrape off any excess wax Place stained parts between two white blotters and press with hot iron Then rub spots with cold lard or turpentine and wash In warm suds POLLY DEAR POLLY My Pet Peeve is with friends and relatives who bring their children to visit and then allow them to run helter skelter through the house They act as if there is nothing wrong in letting child bang on the piano turn the knobs on the television set and so on begrud serving refreshments to such children as they invariab spill things and the parents ignore it and some of these are highly educated professional people This is annoying when you think you have graduated from sticky door knobs and spilled punch Such parents hold tight rein in their own homes so why are they insensitive in anothers MARVA DEAR POLLY Like Susan could not find nonskid material to use for the bottoms of the feet on pajamas made for my grandchildren tried light weight rubber backed drapery fabric and it worked beautiful put piece of the pajama material on the inside of each foot to make it soft Hope this helps Susan ANNA MARY DEAR POLLY Susan should spray the bottoms of the feet in her childrens pajamas with rubber rug backing This nonslip backing is sold in shops that sell rug making supplies LINDA DEAR POLLY There is nonskid fabric made for the soles of childrens pajamas and knitted and crocheted bedroom slippers that comes in sheets twelve by thirtyxsix inches bought some of this at fabric shop in Florida but imagine such shops all over have it DEAR POLLY Maybe some of you have been doing this for years but it is recent discovery of mine always hated the mess caused by blood splattcriiig all over the kitchen cupboard when pounded meat but now put piece of plastic wrap over the meat and it works beautifully No splatters no mess on the hanuiier and the plastic wrap stays intact no matter how hard or how long pound Try this you will like it DOROTHY
