the US National Safety Council Possibly most mom said that des ite an annual in flation rate 88 October the programs objec tive of holding inflation to 24 gr cent from 1975 to 1978 has enmet He said inflation over the last two years totalled 155 per cent just one tpercentage point higher than twoyear goal set when the program started We failed in the second year he said but the target was overachieved in the first year Daley said examination of wage increases in the last two years reveals that Canadians made 18 per cent more while in flation increased by 155 per cent However he said that in crease in pay is offset by 10 per cent decline in the value of the Canadian dollar which will begin to show up in prices as manufacturers restock im ported materials and goods BUY CAREFULLY He suggested shoppers buy carefully and buy Canadian where possible to reduce the impact of the devalued dollar on their purchasing power Until the antiinflation legislation expires wa and price increases will be eld to six per cent Daley said No longer can unions and pro ducers take increases above that figure because the clause which permitted increases above the guidelines to catch up to the rate of inflation if it ex ceeded the annual target has been thrown out The six per cent wage guideline is flexible for the in dividual however because some employees can get more than six per cent if other workers in the same company get less than six per ce per cent last DAVID DALEY The averaging is still there he said Though the antiinflation pro es met gram ends formally next April 14 Daley said individual com panies will not come out of con trols until the end of their next ï¬scal year SAME FOR PRICES That means that some em loyees will come outof con tros next July and Oct while most employea come off next Dec 31 The same applies for rices federal govemment will set up monitoring agency to keep an eye on wages and prices and while that ency will not have the force law behind it Daley said it will take pretty forceful measures to ensure there are no wage and price bubbles in the post contnols period He also said the outlook for the postcontrols period is reasonably good
