12 the examiner Friday Doc 1971 am smrts wheel Goalies have toughiob By ED HARPER Chay For more years than care to admit have been watching goalkeepers play hockey have studied that posi tion probably more than most of the people who make their living out of the game have come to the conclusion that most goalkeepers play ing hockey have had poor coaching and that through their minor careers have been allowed to develop bad habits which cant be overcome when they grow up Habits such as flopping on the ice to stop routine shots that could be handl ed easily with the legs stick or catching glove Most goalies watch have bad habit of moving before the shot is even fired which leaves nice target each time for the shooter Angles are one of the main things goalkeeper should learn yet you can see big league players nearly every game you watch playing the angle wrong and being scored on One of the very bad habits that minor league coaches have is putting the worst skater in goal goalkeeper to be good must be one of the strongest and best skaters on the team If you watch the goalkeepers working out with their teams you will see very few who are really good skaters goalkeeper must be able to skate backwards almost as well as frontwards In developing goalkeeper coach should start with good strong skater and drill him with his full set of equip ment on And before he is shoved into the net make sure that he can move on his skates forwards to each side as well as up and down exercises to develop his speed in get ting to his feet from any prostrate position Over the years have found that the position of goalkeeper is the most nervewracking position to have on hockey team and that the coaches and managers are to blame for this If goalie plays well in the nets and the team wins they treat him like hero But if he played just as well and the team lost then the goalie is bum This has happened too often and has ruined more of the better goalkeepers through the years than any other thing Coaches forget that for an opposing player to have shot on the net defenceman or forward had to have made mistake or wasnt capable of playing as well as the opposi tion at that moment have also found that coaches judge goalies too fast at training camps Naturally goalie trying out for team amongst strangers is going to be little nervous and goalie cant play to his best under this strain The reason he is nervous is obvious he knows that if he lets goal in everyone will see it little different from playing out where mistake after mistake is made and very seldom notic ed In most cases if good goalie is given fair chance to show what he can do he will prove himself in few prac tices or games But the more confidence coach can instill in goalie the better job he will do On most teams goalkeepers are changed more than any other position It doesnt give player chance to get his confidence and he is usually off on his timing which is the most important part of goalkeeping when he is just put in the net After the many years of study on goalkeeping in hockey would not and could not advise young boy to play that position It is the mos hankless job on hockey teamand is position where you are blamed too often for the teams downfall Coaches forget that they make mistakes more often than the players but they seldom ever admit it Failure of talks Eric Cumming captain of the iiarric the National Hockey League last summer Edmonton Oilers general manager Brian Conacher said Thursday He predicted the WHA will deal from stronger posi tion when future negotiations for merger or alliance resume be tween the two leaguesriand insisted new negotiations are in evitable Everybody will wind up doing what is best for hockeysaid Conacher We want one strong league It will be called the NHL Its terrible price to pay for three initials but it has to come about The NHL admits Cleveland Barons Colorado Rockies and other clubs are having financial difficulties with Cleveland and Colorado in the worst positions LEAGLE IMPROVED The WHA is much improved and will deal from position of strength or at least equality rather than from the position of weakness we held last summer Conacher said One of the ironies of the failure of all those talks was that the WHA was supposed to die as result but instead this league is 30 per cent stronger said Conacher former NHL player He said that except for Montreal Canadicns the WHA prod uct on the ice is as good as the NHLs product and Im not sure that game between Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton iilers on our good nights is below the calibre of any NHL game Im sure the people of Edmonton want to be in the NHL but cant say the product will improve because theres myth about the quality of that leagues product Four of last years teams folded in preparation for merger said Conacher Weve absorbed most of the good players The NHL hasnt had that luxury STILL LOSING He admitted most WHA teams and possibly all money this season but the financial structure of each will lose team ap pears stronger because the decks had been cleared and extra money had been provided for the increased cost of operating in the NHL raway entries
