Staff Reporter The enjoyment of interacting with other people the sense of deep satisfaction and purpose in working together as team the exhilaration in seeing the finished product all these re resent the rewards of in vo vement in amateur theatre These are the sentiments ex pressed by members of Barries only amateur theatre group the Littles Hill Players In 1963 handful of local people who had love for drama and desire to provide vehicle for nonprofessional people to get involved in theatre pooled their talents and energies and started the Littles Hill Players Amateurtheatre is people oriented organization its foun dation IS built from teamwork and mutual respect Adversit is no stranger to amateur atre and the Lit tles Hill Players The president of the Barrie amateur theatre group is Graham Allary 26 and he ex presses the major problem associated with the Littles Hill Players The biggest problem of an amateur theatre is funding believe Littles Hill Players must continually work toward selfsufficiency that is we must eventually be able to fund ourselves But right now we need the support of the city FUNDING Unlike professional theatre companies who receive sizeable grants from different branches of the government and from private donations amateur theatre has had to rely on box office receipts foritsfunding We have almost $2000 all of which we had to put out for our current production Gods Favorite Allary says And based on our box office receipts for this play well determine if we will be producing our annual childrens plays which are staged in February Were going for broke on the Gods Favorite production But amid the tight financial restraints and the limitations of physical facilities everyone associated with the Gods Favorite production rovcr 50 ï¬ople is donating countless urs in trying to make this play smash hit OPEN TON GMT Gods Favorite opens tonight at 830 at the Georgian College Theatre for three nights Auditions for the play started in the end of September The plays cast has been rehearsing three nights week three hours each night at different locations across the city Not having its own catrc to rehearse in and to stage plays is one of the Littles Hill Players most frustrating problems This has caused us lot of disappointment and frustration says Marilyn Campbell past president of the amateur theatre group Because we dont have our own theatre it means we have to scurry around and book rehearsal times in whatever school auditorium we can find Furthermore we have to com pete with professional theatres in our renting of stage facilities for utting on our plays This play which is one of Neil Simons comedy dramas cen tres on the moral temptations placed on the plays hero Joe Benjamin by messenger from God whose name is Sid ney Lipton The brisk flippant Deep satisfaction and sense of purpose dialogue exchanges among the cast members provide the humor in the play WIDE APPEAL Sharon Brown publicity director for the Littles Hill Players says Gods Favorite will appeal to all age groups There are eight players in this comedy play and the humorous exchanges among all the cast members will provide laughs for everyone she says In the play Ben Strudwick 36 plays in the lead role of Joe Benjamin Martin Hayes 32 plays Sidney Lipton Marilyn Sanderson plays Rose Joe Ben jamins faithful but eccentric wife John Irwin Mike Doyle and Jenny Wildman play the Benjamin children and Carolyne Acheson and Peter Murison play the servants in the Benjamin household Strudwick is newcomer to the group in fact this is his fir st experience in acting in play This is my first experience with theatre acting and with working with group like this What challenge it has been for me says Strudwick When Nick Schols the director asked me to play the lead role of Joe Benjamin told him he had to be out of his mind But later told him if he was willing to take chan ce with me then would give it everything had Not having acted in front of live audience before Strudwick expressed both uncertainty and determination in assessing how he will react on opening night find it difficult to an ticipate how Ill react to the audience but all of us have worked hard at rehearsals over the past six weeks We all ha vc great confidence in one another Nick our director has been very patient and en couraging to me so on opening night Ill be ready everyone will be ANOTHER NEWtOMIIR Another newcomer to the amateur theatre group and to the stage is Martin Hayes who plays Sidney Lipton the other lead role in Gods Favorite In the play Lipton is com plex quixotic mercurial character Because of his ex treme dramatic personality Lipton has presented Hayes with moments of frustration and consternation Getting into the character of Sidney Lipton has been dif ficult because hes such coni plex person Besides con centrated on learning everything could of Liptons personality This has hcl ed me learn my lines and to arpcn the dramatic emphasis Sidney Lipton establishes in the play Hayes says Both Strudwick and Hayes stress the great help director Nick Schols has been both in instilling confidence in them and in teaching them important theatrical and dramatic techni ucs Nic has been very rcccp tive person says Studwick He has been very good to work with and his knowledge of stage direction and dramatic delivery have been very valuable for me Hayes echoes the same kind of praise for Schols Nicks method of blocking the play that is of going through the play stepbystep has been tremendous help for me in learning my lines Nick is also very flexible he is very easy director to work with But also he wont compromise with his artisticbeliefs Joe Benjamin tplaycd by Ben Strudwick undergoes great physical suffering in his determination not to renounce God This is the theme of the Neil Simon oom edy play Gods Favorite which opens tonight at the Georgian ollcgc Theatre These two photos mrc taken at Tuesday nights final dress rehearsal Gods Favorite is being produced by llarries Littles llill Players amateur Schols competence and finesse as director evolved from his long involvement in theatre nly thirtyronc years old he has been active in theatre work for Iii years EXPERIENCED Before moving to Barrie in May of this year Schols livcd in Woodstock where he was in volvcd for two years in thc Woodstock Little Theatre In fact it was Schols who sold the executive of Littles Ilill Players on staging Gods Favorite Ive seen and acted in many Neil Simon plays and when came to Barrie approached the executive of the threatrc company and told them about Gods Favorite and how feasible it was from produc tion standpoint Schols says But the cast and director Gods Favorite arent the only ones who work hard The plays techniuil crew also have cnt long hours in planning and working The set designer for Gods Favorite is Marg Hayes no relation to Martin Hayes and shes also newcomer to the amateur group She recently completed her degrec in theatre from the University of Guelph and works fulltime for Barrie financial company find my involvement in Littles Hill group great form of recreation and enjoyment Ive only lived in Barrie for month but Ive met so many beautiful people since joining the theatre group Miss Hayes says HARDWORK And she confesses she and her crcwmcmlxtr volunteers have had to work hard in con structing the sets in time for the opening night performance of Gods Favorite ur first big problem in con structing the sets was finding building to work in Once that was settled drew up the technical drawings based on the plans Nick Schols showed me And had to design the sets so they would be sturdy economical lightweight and reusable she says The stage manager for the play is Paul Arbour strong and active supporter of amateur theatre in Barrie for several years Arbour has the job of coordinating and or chestrating all stage sound and lighting activities used in the production of the play My job is to make sure everything comes off on time And once the last week of rehearsals arrive make sure the sets and technical equip ment are set up properly and are running efficiently Ar bour says Gods
