Worst year for infestation at schools MIDHURST Staff Dr Peter Watson chiefmedical officer of the Simcoe County District Health Unit SCDHU says 1977 has been the worst ear ever for lice in festation and scabies among school children in the county The problem appeared in earlySeptember as children returned to school he said in an interview Friday The odd case came into the schools and spread through the classrooms he said Lice eggs resembling small white flecks on childs hair hatch and spread quickly from one child to another in setting such as classroom where they are in close contact to each other he said To cure the problem Dr Watson said an in fected childs hair must be thoroughly cleaned with special shampoo and then combed out with special comb designed to remove the lice eggs Despite major effort by county health nurses to restrict the spread of lice in festation and scabies through classroom to classroom examination of students Dr Wat son said the problem reached almost epidemic proportions in some areas However continued efforts by the nurses have now brought the problem under control in all areas he said Dr Watson said one roblem combatting lice infestation and sca ies is the incorrect impression among parents that the diesase is valid indicator of the level of family hygiene The disease is most common to children regardless of how clean they are because they play in the dirt and roll in the grass But once child picks it up it is basically the responsibility of the family to clean the child up thoroughly before he returns to class Dr Watson said Committed for trial The 18yearold Utopiaarea man charged with murder in the beating death of 86year old Maude Jean Bonney Sept was commit ted for trial before judge and jury Friday in Barrie Judge Norman Nadeau ruled police and the Crown have sufficient evidence against Daniel William Fannon to commit him for trial after fourhour preliminary hearing in provincial court Fannon was arrested 15 hours after the body of Mrs Bonney was found in her 186 Blake St home and has been held in the Bar rie jail since despite attempts by defence counsel Tom Dart to arrange bail The firstdegree charge against the Utopia man was reduced to seconddegree murder Friday at the request of assistant Crown at torney Tom Cleary Cleary said later the change in the charge occurred because the murder did not appear to be planned or deliberate the provisions of firstdegree charge Saccharin ban may be delayed WASHINGTON AP proposed 18 month delay of federal ban on saccharin is on President Carters desk after receiving final approval by the US Congress even as new study linked the artificial sweetener to cancer in animals The Senate approved the measure on voice vote Friday after House of Represen tativesSenate conference committee worked out differences in two versions passed earlier this year The bill would require products containing saccharin to carry labels warning that the substance is potential health hazard for humans and has been found to cause cancer in laboratory animals The legislation would affect millions of calorieconscious consumers who regularly use diet foods and beverages Meanwhile congressional report reaf firmed earlier findings by Canadian scien tists that saccharin is potential cause of cancer in humans But the new study called the sugar substitute one of the weakest can oercausing agents ever detected The report by the Office of Technology Assessment said current testing methods in cluding highdose animal tests can predict that particular substance is likely to cause cancer in humans
