By SUE BURKE Examiner Staff Reporter John Hambides manager of Georgian Bay Ambulance Dispatch wants Ald Gord Mills to explain his comment describing the Simcoe Rescue amateurish If he has something to base this statement on he says he should let the public know what it is Hambides whose service dispatches the squad on calls on the advice of existing emergency services is upset over Ald Mills comment made at Monday nights general committee meeting In my work whenever you make statement or plan you have to do the research and have the facts to back you said Hambides Wednesday What is he basing his statement on if Hambides also wants Ald Mills to explain his com ments that existing services 75 should handle needed rescues We have had terrific co operation from such groups as the misfit firefighters in helping us out of their ter jj ritory with emergencies he said But you run into pro blemof boundaries These services may be fi willing to go out of their area to help but that lowers the Squad as Wintario supports 26 projects Grants from Wintario pro ceeds ranging from $112 to $11129 have been given to 26 projects in Simcoe County The largest grant awarded up to $11129 was services have an add pro blem of manpower If you depend on your ex isting services for rescue work are you going to emure there will be one or two per sons available at all times for rescue calls COST DRAWBACK The major drawback to creating municipal rescue force among existing emergency services is the cost says Hambides It would cost about $80000 year to run it he said All the Simcoe Rescue Squad is asking for is one shot figure of $55000 Hambides rates the squad as the besttrained rescue service available to Simcoe County residents and says they are an effective comple ment to ambulance service Even if rescue squad doesnt save lives dramatically they can cut down the time erson is trapped in wrec ed vehi cle which is very important he said The sooner the squad frees an injuried person from wreckage the better their prqgnosis is he says On col winter day every minute person spends trapped in car makes it harder on CT917C The squad also trees ani bulance men from the worry of extricating victims says Hambides Ambulance personnel are trained to assist from medical point of view he said If theyre spending up to half an hour to free someone thats time they should have spent caring for the patient Hambides counters Ald Mills claims the squad has no provincial support with description of the pilot dispatching project the squad and his service is engaged in under the ministry of health Under the project the squad has an ambulance radio worth $15000 loaned to them from the ministry It is the first service know of other than an ambulance ser vice to have this radio system says Hambides If they were amateurs we certainly wouldnt con tinue to work with them on that basis Hambidesnsays he doesnt want to challenge Ald Mills into making statements But he has made some allegations he should back with facts he said If Ald Mills knows of better trained rescue service well start calling them he added because what am concerned with is the care person should receive Mills defends his description Ald Gord Mills says his description of the Simcoe Rescue Squad as amateurish at Monday nights council meeting wasnt criticism of the members training What he is questioning is their professionalism he says would like to make it clear that in no way am try ing to belittle the rescue squad he said Wednesday night Ald Mills says he takes his interpretation of amateurish from the Ox ford dictionary where an amateur is one who does something as pastime rather than profession The rescue squad is in no way amateurish in terms of its training said Ald Mills but the operation is amateurish because its pastime for the members not job Ald Mills sa he cant ac cept the squa as private corporation feel that the business of rescue is business of responsibility and it was proved in the ambulance ser vice private companies dont work he said He also says if there is need for rescue service in On tario the provincial govem ment would have funded one before now This squad hasnt got the blessings of the provincial government he said and dont think we should lose sight of the fact if the pro Vince felt it was necessary they would have done something Ald Mills dismisses cor porate donations to the squad as having no real meaning of su port Companies con tri uting to them are being good citizens and anyways they can write it off as tax deduction He says his concern as an elected official is whether Barrie residents would ac cept spending tax dollars in support of the uad Mills ad ed he doubts the city will give moral or financial support to the squad doubt wed give moral support after deciding not to he financially because the two work handinhand he said cant give moral sup port to something wouldnt donate to Ald Mills also says he does not think the squad will have much effect within Barries city limits saying their main work wllbed ne QLock II adjusts color at touch Extra Special Futuristic Electrotuning Extraordina Quintrix extra lens for
