MarvMu 1aA the examiner Friday Sept 30 1917 Ontario ministry spending $57M on renewable energy conservation TORONTO The Ministry of Energy will invest $57 million on renewable energy and con servation projects over the next ypar Energy Minister James aylor has announced This represents almost three times the outlay of the past year said Taylor and indicates the Governments ex panded commitment to energy conservation and renewable energy sources Taylor said that the develop ment of renewable energy technology is an essential future alternative to fossil fuel supplies He said that $600000 will be spent on renewable energy projects in 1977 primarily by contracts placed through other government ministries Ad ditional funding by these other ministries and agencies will bring the governments total expenditure on renewable energy close to $750000 In addition Ontario Hydro is spending another $150000 on renewable energy chiefly on solar water heaters improved heat pumps and in monitoring alternate energy resource developments Building on feasibility studies an design analyses carried out over the past two years the Energy Minister said we will be demon strating solar technology in government residential com Cooper Tool Group conserving energy Ray Harris is enthusiastic about energy conservation Harris engineering manager for The Cooper Tool Group in Barrie has had large fans put in at shipping doors to cut down on heat loss in winter He has had sheets of plastic placed to insulate large plate glass Windows at one wall of the large Inntsfil Street plant He is turning down the ther mostat and loWering light stan dards to make lighting more ef ficient Its all part it in energy con servation program Cooper Tool has been involved ltl since deVeloping an interest is months ago said Harris in an interv1ew that litii were lookA mg at what was happening in the United States through our experience Wllll that in our American plant he said We chided something needed to be done The initial step was shutting down heat when it could be done and reducing temper atures in phases he said Were down to 70 degrees now and we were probably at 74 or upwards before he said He expects Cooper Tool will eventually settle at 68 degrees LIGHT PRtKiRAM Weve also installed pro gram for turning lights off when they arent needed he said Before they were always left on Lights that can be turned off are colorcoded in red to catch the attention of security guards on their patrols He has bad winch diameter fans installed over shipping doors in the plant where trucks stand for long periods of time while being loaded OFFERS COMFORT AND SERVICE FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION Weve also put sealers around the doors in the form of rubber pads to keep drafts out he said The large fans two to truck opening create downcraft and produce what llarris calls warm barrier in winter Another 10 fans are going up in hightemperature areas to distribute moving air he adil ed Fans will also move warm air in wmtcr and satisfy workers whose major complaint is cold feet said arms Cooper lool occupies plant mm in 1948 says Harris and age has produced the problem of heat loss through cement walls We put new roof on ttt months ago to stop leaks there he said and were caulking all gaps in the walls LUNG WA particular problem is presented by one long wall tltal is half cement half glass and faces strong Winds We hung heavy plastic sheets inside the plant against the wall that are just rolled up in the summer he said hi the winter the sheets come down and can be screwed right into the cement wall base says Harris It has done fantastic job there are no cold drafts coming in he said Cooper lool has also installed water cooling system to Cir culate warm air and chill it at 45 degrees The water goes right through the eqmpment and passes through our molds and then our chiller he said If you normally keep your water for recirculation it would be too hot he said but 0A FULLY STAFFED everything at ther Barrie plant from boilers to employees washing their hands says Har ris There are about 300 cm ployees who wash their hands before breaks and lunch and that puts strain on the hot water heaterhe says The problem is that you reduce water too much he said Thats no good either Paper towels are another conservation interest People always reach for more towels than they need says Harris so Cooper Tim has changed that With the installa tion of crank device It cheaper to buy paper for it and the amount used is cut down IF YOU SHIVERED THROUGH THE PAST WINTER COME ON OVER TO THE construction of 30 suite solarheated senior citizens residencv in Aylmer ther renewable energy projects include the initial design of wood waste energy complex at Hearst demon stration of prototype fiscal 7778 towards fiveyear goal of 15 per cent reduction in total energy use The ministry has committed $454000 for projects to examine vehicle efficiency im provements car and van pool $295000 on projects that will expand its capability to meet the demand for energy conservation in formation number of field test projec ts are being undertaken direc tly by the Ministry of Energy before programs for the residential consumer sector are started on broad scale One example is demon stration of the use of aerial thermography to determine heat loss from buildings held in Lindsay May
