OPP take to lake aboard new vessel By SUE BURKE Examiner Staff Reporter The Barrie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has replaced its 21yearold atrol boat with new ibreglass model worth bet ween $48000 and $50000 Constable Don Gelinas one of four men on the patrol crew says the decision to buy the boat came when police realized buying new one would be better than repairing the existing one The new boat arrived June 29 from Spokane Washington where it was built to withstand rough Constable waters Gelinas OPP crews worked for month to install police radios and special rescue equip ment The boat had its first run with an assignment in Kingston the last two weeks in August patrolling waters during an Olympic sailing competition says Constable Gelinas We were down there for turn weeks while Canadian and Morocco sailors com peted to be on Olympic crews he said Our job was to keep an eye on them and to keep powerboats out of the area when the 400 sailboats were competing The boat now operates out of the OPP berth at Gull Rock Marina answering distress calls on lake SimV coe says Constable Gelinas We operate in crews of two men and since Labor Day were just on call in stead of regular patrols he said The new boat has had its first challenge on Lake Sim coe he added battling high waves to rescue men whose boat overturned during bad storm ALL SUMMER The patrol boat WASAGA BEACH Town council was addressed Tuesday by Jim Parker who has been appointed coordinator to carry out and administer the five year plan for Wasaga Beach decided upon by council and the Dr Stuart Smith when the provincial legislature reconvenes in October The op osition leader identified ose as the major areas of concern during brief visit to Barrie Tuesday He had lunch with members of the local Liberal riding association at Maude Kourys Steak House before proceeding to the Ontario Civil Service Commission Staff Development Centre on Big Bay Point where he spoke to senior civil ser vants on the relationship bet ween the opposition party and the civil service The session closed to the press was part of twoweek the examiner Wodnosday Sept 28 1917 Smith sizesup cabinet during
