14 the examiner Thursday September 1977 Underwood sidelined 700 fans disappointed Slessor mouls Owen Sound Scott Haskins If Howie Forbes has anything to say about it the Barrie olts will be force to be reckoned with when they open 33 their MidOntario Junior League season Oct iii Owen Sound Forbes who is entering his tirst season at the helm of the club after directing the Barrie tivitans to the allOntario bantam title last season doesnt expect his team to perform miracles but he does expect every player on the team to give 150 percent when they are on the ice Last season the olts finished in fourthplace iii the league and made an early exit from the pl ayoft picture when they lost their opening round series in four straight games to Oak Ridges the team that went on to claim the title No one has made this team and if any players are coming to camp with the idea they have then they better be ready for disappointment Forbes said We have to sort the players out quick and arent going to baby anyone tolts open their training camp Sept at the Barrie Arena between 715 pm and 915 pm and it will run until Oct The club has exhibition games scheduled for Sept 25 and Oct Forbes said that the club is sending about 45 invitations out to area players who might be able to help the club but he isnt going to turn away any players who show up at the practices Theres no way we will turn anyone away he said If people want to try out for the club we have to let them In lot of cases the players you dont give proper chance at camp come back to haunt you when the season starts Examiner Sports Writer liorbes said that he wont be paying too much attention to the overage players who will be trying for place on the team We can use threeoveragejunior players this season but ill all the young talent in the area Im not really going to be looking toward them to lead us In recent years the violence of hockey has been getting more ink than the actual game Forbes plans to inform his players to play it tough but he doesnt want them standing around waiting to fight want players who use their heads in the corners and dont throw check and then stand around taking stupid penalties Its just too hard on ulcers he said want my players to get in there throw the check and then get out again want to see the scoreboard work and it wont if were sitting in the penalty box all night The trend in junior hockey is overlook the small with natural goalscoring ability and take the bigger playe even if they have inferior skill Forbes however doesnt see it that way dont use tape measure to measure players ability If he has that natural goal scoring ability and can put the puck in the net when he gets the chance hes going to be on my team regardless of his size he said want allround players that arent afraid of the heavy going and can put the puck in the net Forbes said the club is allowed to sign 25 players and dress It for each game Work will be the key to any success the Colts enjoy this season Ill dress 19 guys but they will all be in topnotch condi tion Players who are in good shape dont pick up the little nagging injuries that go with hockey Hard work was the key last year when the ivitans won theallOntario title he said lhosc guys werent afraid ot bit of hard work and it paid off for them in the end and thatsthe way likeit Forbes will have manager Doug Itayiiiond and assistant orn Bannernian to help him run the cliib this season As the saying goes three heads are better than one There are only five teams ready for the 197778 season Barrie Owen Sound Salvagcniin Oak Itidgcs Ienetang but scheduling wouldnt allow it this season players xseisewvsiwm four on the road Solis hoinc games will be Thursdays starting with the home opener Oct ti against Orillia All games start at HJlo pm Forbes sees Orillia as the force of the league for this season but Oak Ridges will be returning in search of its coiid straight title The ioiiipctition should be licrce lllls season with some Intermediate AA playoff series against Slessor and Periard Insurance Wednesday at Queens Park and the rest of the team should have joined him Owen Sound committed total of nine errors in the nine inning ball game and Slessor took advantage of most of them on their way to 131 trouncing of the visitors Underwood twisted his left ankle in game in Owen Sounds Scenic City Softball League on Iiesday and the in jury wouldnt let him step for ward to release the ball Bill Underwood Brads father came on to pitch lor Owen Sound but wasnt as bad as the score would indicate team committing nine errors cant be expected to win and the pitching can only carry team so far Its no secret that Brad is onenian show for Owen Sound Any success that Owen Sound does have is always linked to how well he performs They dont have the fielding or hit 31 is Moior task for hurlers BRAD UNDERWOOD ting ability of Slessor and it showed Wednesday NO ONIESI It was really no contest as Slessor scored two runs in the first inning and then erupted to score seven more in the third inning as Owen Soiqu comniit ted five errors The outcome of the game has norm ipghM rg to be considered major disap pointment for the 700 fans that turned out for the game They came expecting to see another pitching duel between the young Underwood and Slessor pitcher Wayne McLeniian Both pitchers were outstan ding in the second game of the series at Queens Park Sunday and were looking forward to continuing their duel McLen nan obligated by giving up only four hits and striking out six but Underwood was riding in the bench sure wish was pitching Underwood said dont like the idea of sitting on the bench watching us get slaughtered by team think we should be able to beat Andy Browning and Bill Thurlow started things off for Slessor by scoring runs in the first inning Browning belted single and went to second on an overthrow to first base and scored as Thurlow lashed single centre field that got by Owen Sounds Brent capitalize on the break For all intensive purposes the game ended in the third inning when Slessor added seven more runs on six hits and three Owen Sound errors Browning started the inning with single and immediately stole second base on the next pitch Thurlow and Doug Keans were retired then the roof fell in Mike Laycock and Terry Gif fen stroked backtoback doubles to score two runs Neil Parker reached base on an er ror and Barry Neely walked to load the bases before God Wright came up and poked single to score two more runs HELPED AUSE McLennan helped his cause by driving in Wright and Neely with the fifth and sixth runs of the inning and then Browning collected his third hit of the night as he delivered deep triple to score McLennan Bill Underwood had to be faulted for some of the runs but the blame cant be put squarely on his shoulders The errors sure didnt help my pitching he said after the third inning Our damn short stop Dennis Patterson made three errors in row in the last inning Brad really wanted to play tonight but Jt really doesnt make any sense because he would just hurt his leg more and wouldnt be able to help us in our own league in Owen Sound This is just recreational ball anyway so theres no sense in him missing work because of ball injury Owen Sound finally managed to score run off McLennan in the fourth inning but not before he had shut them out for 22 con secutive innings Bill Underwood stroked twoout single went to second on an error by Slessor left fielder Gord Wright and then scored on single by Larry Quesnell Slessor came right back in their half of the inning to get that run back and then added another just to be sure Owen Sound were through Once again it was an error that led to Barries runs Keans started the inning with single and scored all the way from first on what should have been an easy out Owen Sound second basemen Rick Arm strong let Giffens hit play him instead of charging and it skip WAYNE MCLENNAN ped through his legs Giffen went to third on the play and scored on sacrifice fly by Parker Slessor didnt show any sym pathy for the visitors and added two runs in the eighth inning Wright scored his second run of the game on Thurlow dou ble who went to third on the play and scored backwards as the ball skipped into the Owen Sound bench Slessor coach George Boor man was disappointed in the game from fans point of view but was very pleased with the way his team performed Weve been playing good ball for the last month Thats why were ahead of Beatrice Foods 30 in the Barrie and District Senior Softball League playoffs he said thought Owen Sound would have put up better game even with out Brad pitching expected to win the game 31 or 41 but cer tainly not 11H Slessor moves on to the In termediate AA southern semi finals now against team from Comber near Toronto but they will have to do without third baseman Keans who is off to the Junior Oshawa Generals training camp Slessor will also be without the
