I1Io the examiner Friday Augugt 19 1917 sports wl WWWlIfVflfi Greyhounds coming By El HARPER Chay Dog racing will be coming to Barrie during the Barrie Fair and for those who have never seen the greyhounds race treat is in store It is thrilling sport to watch and as the dogs are free from humans while they are racing there is no doubt that the results are honest The greyhound is the oldest dog known to history belong ing to the Saluki family His ancestry can be traced back to time beyond the building of the pyramids His form is chiseled on plaques made thoisands of years ago He was domesticated dog and it is possible that the greyhound was mated with wild dogs through succeeding centuries to bring about the various breeds of dogs that exist today The Pharaohs used the Saluki when hunting and this do was lmown at least five centuries ago in Mesopotamia an Asia Minor The Greyhound has no acute sense of smell as have other dogs This is offset by uncanny hearing remarkable eyesight and the speed that makes him the fastest dog that lives Although champion greyhound in full flight can leap from 12 to 20 feet as against 25 to 27 feet for race horse the greyhound can almost keep pace with horse for quarter of mile Dog racing can be traced back to time prior to the Chris tian era In the Middle Ages it enjoyed tremendous populari ty in England In book entitled Rural Sports of England it was stated In our country Englandl during the reign of King John greyhounds were frequently received by him as payment in lieu of money for the renewal of yams fines and forfeitures belonging to the Crown Many years ago dog racing was introduced in California Ihippets which are dogs smaller than greyhounds were us ed It was soon found that the latter was faster and whippets were discarded When opposition was raised in California to the chasing and killing of rabbits as sport Owen Smith one of the leaders in he dog racing game then largely localized in California decided that the sport could continue without op position if some contrivance were invented which would substitute for the rabbit Smith devised an electrical rail fixed fake white rabbit on an extended arm and tried it out The dogs chased the im itation rabbit with the same enthusiasm as they had the live one Smith patented his invention and made fortune for himself The first oval track that Smith built was at Emeryville California It was less than threesixteenths of mile in cir To tie OASA playoffs Slessor club rolling pounds Starr Electric And now its tied the Slessor and Periard Insurance Club is
