New measures to im Further measures designed to improve the General Radio Service CB band were an nounced recently by Ross Milne MP parliamentary secretary to federal Com munications Minister Jenne Sauve at symposium on General Radio Service at York University With 500000 licences in force up to one and half million Canadians now use CB radios The explosive growth in popularity of CB has brought with it problems such as chan nel congestion and over crowding improper operation by some users and interference with television sets and other Exploding myths about cable Some of the fables that arise around CB antennas concern the transmission line Com munications antenna systems almost invariably use coaxial cable It consists of an inner conductor which may be stranded or solid wire polyethelene insulation sur rounding the inner conductor metallic sheild usually of braided wire strands and OFFICIAL TEN CODE 100 Caution 101 Received poorly 102 Good reception 103 Stop transmitting shortened to coax comes from the fact both conductors center wire and shield are concentric to the same axis Now to explode one common fable about coax You cannot tune the antenna system by trimming electronic length is wrong you can mistakenly alter the high vswr somewhat by experimen ting with coax cable length But the only true is retuning the antenna The reason Coaxial cable construction builds in quality called characteristic im pedance The nature of the is staggers cable and its spacing between inner conductor and shield im part this imepodance which is expressed on ohms This is not the same ohms you read with an ohmmeter Both RG58U and RG8U cables are 52ohm transmission lines This 5Zohm impedance holds throughout the cable no matter what its length PRO VIDED the termination at both ends equals the same im pedance That is your CB transmitter matches this 52 ohms and so must the antenna properly designed and exact home entertainment equip ment Mr Milne said Among the measures an nounced to improve the General Radio Service are the following system of temporary per mits and call signs will be im plemented which will allow person to use CB set legally for 60 days while his or her licence application is being pro cessed by the department At present the owner of new CB set must wait until obtaining regular licence before transmitting and because licences are being processed at rate of several thousand month delays sometimes oc cur INFORMATION PROGRAM public information pro gram is planned to promote user awareness of and respect for regulations governing the use of CB in Canada The pro gram will consist of films ex prove CB band to amend regulations made under the Radio Act to control or prohibit sale possession and use of linear amplifiers exter nal radio power boosters con nected to CB radios to illegally raise their output Linear amplifiers are sometimes the cause of interference Under the new regulations CBers would also be required to per mit inspection of their stations at any reasonable time or face the possibility of fine or licence revocation Of course that roublesome minority of deliberate and habitual offenders wont be too impressed by these measures said Mr Milne noting com plants about violations of the regulations were rising sharp ly Mr Milne said prosecutions and licence suspensions would probably have to be used against some individuals Watch For Next Months hibitions hot line and talk show appearances by departmental personnel and revised edition of GRS operating handbook which will soon be provided ly tuned antenna
