County seorts Playoff spots to be settled By BILL CURRAN With the regular schedule nearing finish there is still keen battle for the six playoff places among the eight South Simcoe league baseball teams The defending champion rillia Majors Ivy Leafs and Alliston Canucks all have chance to finish on top with Bar ries improved Red Sox right on their heels ollingWood Cavemen Tottenham Bears and Newmarket are also very much in the fight for playoff spots The youthful Orillia Pontiac Juniors with many juvenile players in the lineup are the only team which can be counted out so ar Outfielder Tim Oliver and pitcheroutfielder Jerry Udell are the leading hitters of the Majors aceording to league averages Catcher Clyde Ilarris and infielder Barry Cockburn also are rated as dangerous clutch hitters for the rillia team which is seeking its 10th county championship in the past 14 years We are not taking anything for granted but well be in there trying our best answered Coach Gander Ross when asked how he assessed rillias chances of winning again In reply to the question of whether it Would be better for the league if the honors were passed around more the rillia coach commented That may be true but we are in baseball to win if we can That the only way to play limer who topped the league in averages recently is having his best season yet at the plate for the Majors Udell has been consistently good hitter for the rillia team as well as are pitcher llurler Peter Koehli also has been faring better at the plate as well as maintaining fine pitching record Last year the Majors beat out Crecmore Braves in the finals to take the title for the fourth year in row Earlier they defeated Ivy Leafs and Midland Indians in the playoffs while Crcernore was taking Col lingwood and Beet on
