tasks they enjoy may have unsuspected harmful ef fects says Dr John Mc Cullers developmental psychologist who is doing re search in this area In some cases businessmen teachers or parents may stifle creativity when they give people material rewards such as money bonuses candy or presents he said Rewards may be necessary for many routine mechanical tasks McCullers said but ad ded Rewards may keep us on the job pulling lever if we get enough for pulling the lever But it wont keep our minds on thejob We could be thinking about when the bell will ring when we can go home and those kinds of things Speaking about the phenome non of people doing what they love to do without pay such as volunteer work or working with young people McCullers said People will work long hours take on all sorts of hardships you couldnt pay them to do and get great deal of satisfaction and interest through their work When person is doing things for the fun of it he or she is happy feels creative does not get tired or hungry is pleasant to be around and inter esting LOSES INTEREST But when controlled by ex temal forces such as rewards person often loses interest gets Aspiring it Young cooks and aspiring craftsmen displayed their works Saturday at Westminster Rresbytcrian Church on Steele Street The children were students at the sixth annual Bar rle hrlstlan Workshop and showed their parents what they had accomplished during Rewarding tasks may be harmful tired watches the clock and is irritable McCullers said Because civilization requires number of boring jobs to be done regularly we may never be able to get away entirely from rewards But in areas where interest creativity flexibility and problemsolving are at stake we might do better to forget some of these rewards and try to go another route McCullers said using rewards to increase performance or mo tivation when its not necessary to do so may destroy persons interest in task he would have enjoyed doing anyway PROJECT CONTINLING Since September 1972 Me Cullers has directed research project on detrimental effects of material reward The project will continue into 1978 In laboratory tests early in the project he and his col leagues Kenneth McGraw and Jan Staat worked with children and adults starting with discrimination tasks that required people to learn simply to distinguish between two things As the research moved into more complex tasks ending with problemsolving in troducing rewards for good per formance tended to produce poorer performance than be fore If its task the subject has teamed well and if he already knows exactly what to do then reward may not interfere and even may help McCullers said craftsmen show their works barbecue on the church grounds Saturday afternoon AT LEFT Debbie Sturgess seven Angele replace cracked ones have two such pans with broken lids and would certainly like to be able to get new tops for my old pans MRS DEAR POLLY When try bacon hamburger and anything that spatters do not use skillet but pan three or four inches high There is no more grease spattering all over my stove This is really blessing ROSE DEAR POLLY My wife and have come up with system that not only saves us time but makes money for us We have separate savings account into which we regularly deposit money for bills that are paid periodically These include auto insurance biannual hospitalization quarterly union dues annual taxes annual and fixed amount each month for our average medical and dental bills When needed we withdraw the money and collect 525 per cent interest from date of deposit to date of withdrawal Annually we take this in terest and deposit it in family savings account We keep ledger type book showing deposits and withdrawals itemized and use separate page for each division of the account It is surprising how quickly the interest adds up from date of deposit to date of withdrawal and that money is not dormant in the checking account Also many banks have an arrangement where when one has savings account with balance of more than $200 ones checking account is free of the 10 cents per check charge This can save $25 or more DEAR POLLY received quite few hanging plants for my birthday Since live on fixed income could not afford to buy inacrame plant holders so used rug yarn to crochet holders for my plants They hang beautifully chain stitched the ropes so some hang higher and some hang lower than the others ESTHER
