ggsfla MTT 33 ï¬ns Ted Follows Dawn Greenhalgh in The Fourposter Follows first night is fairly successful By MURIEL LEFPER The Gryphon Theatre Com pany opened its summer season last night with simple and homey comedy for two charactersa man and his wife Jan de Hartogs play The Fourposter has been bit since first produced in New York in 1952 It is wry and humorous look at the minor problems of married life writ ten with charm and simplicity It is miniature Life with Father and Life with Mother with the anxieties and landmarks of living treated with humor and love So the big crowd at Georgian Theatre which filled the theatre proper and spilled into the centre upstairs pod was excited and expectant This was the first night in Barrie for actor director Ted Follows It was as an actor that Follows chose to make his debut here and perhaps that is how he feels most comfortable at this time With his wife in real life Dawn Greenhalgh the duo had the interesting and theatrically difficult task of covering 35 years of marriage but also of conveying the atmosphere and flavor of the times of the turn of the century ATTENTION ALL CB BUEFS At the end of July The Examiner will actors succeeded best The young hesitant and unsureofthemselves couple became the successful young married couple lionized by society as Michaels book became bestseller Finally after marital pro blems of the usual and familiar they become the edlerly couple leaving their home and their Fourposter for new apart ment There is no doubt that Act II was the high point of the even ing It was during these two scenes that Follows had his greatest impact As the young successful sophisticate of 1901 he brought his best sense of theatre to his audience Greenhalgh too was splendid foil for the crossfire of lines As team they brought spontaneous chuckles and bursts of laughter from their audience who thoroughly enjoyed themelves as they join ed in the fun of Hartogs dialogue It was in creating the feel of the mores and character of the period of the beginning of the 20th century that they failed Somehow the lines came through as an era that could be right now TOO CONTEMPORARY The subtle overall treatment and approch to the period piece was far too contemporary So despite the periodstyle dress and the old artififacts in the bedroom now never really believed that all this was hap pening at much earlier time in America Timothy Bond director must take part of the blame for this One felt that instinctively Dawn Greenhalgh had sense of the proper period But somehow she never followed through with style of that time Sets by Jack Timlock gave real atmosphere to the gradual financial increases in the for tune of the couple The lighting must be noted as very fine and was executed and designed by Dino Ventresca Costumes were generally good and were designed by Barbara Suarez second look however must be given to the design of the gown used for Agnes pregnan cy The impossible shape shouldnt have happened The play continues until Saturday night curtain time at 30 pm There are two matinees Tuesday and Thurs lay at pm Destiny conference Whatever the cost of the Destiny Canada conference Barb Marshall of 44 Worsley St Barrie says it was well worth it The threeday event which was sponsored by the Ontario government was planned to try and work out what the future of Canada will be Four hundred Canadians from all walks of life were invited As an Ontario delegate was proud that the money was spent on such an event It was well worth it met people would never have had the chance to meet otherwise Barb said This conference was differ nent she said because previous discussions held on the subject have been done mainly by po liticians behind closed doors We decided we had responsibility as Canadians to talk to others in our own cities and towns about what we feel we have to do She was speakingat news conference at her home to ex plain to what had come out of the conference TIME RUNNING OUT We knew we had respon sibility to produce something concrete and with only three days to do it in it turned out to be tremendous emotional ex perience to try and talk to as many people as possible It was real high The main thing that came out of the talks was that time is running out for Canada The 400 persons were divided into 17 groups which contained cross section of Canadians Three main questions were put to the groups as they at tended intensive workshop ses sions What do Canadians want What is standing in our way and How do we secure what we want We realized this is country of diversive people it is coun try of minorities and noone felt as though they were part of majority she said FRUSTRATIONS There is tremendous amount of frustration in FrenchCanadians Things are coming to head FrenchCanadians feel there is no respect given to them and their language throughout the rest of Canada The referendum is coming and as one French housewife who was at the conference said We really dont know but we think we are going to vote for separatism Canadians need to change their attitude towards the French learn to communicate with them and the media must begin to do its part the delegates decided The media came in for lot of comment during the con ference It is the duty of the CBC Radio Canada and local news papers to let us know what others in Canada are thinking This is big problem in Canada People in Ontario real ly dont know how other Cana dians think and the same is true all over the country The constitituion must also be changed to include both languages she said And it has got to be done quickly Decentralizing the powers of central government was another solution the group came up with There is lot of dead wood in Ottawa and the provincial governments and it should be sorted out CONCLUSIONS Canadians need more in formation about Canada We all have to be able to participate and decide what changes we want to make Its too strong an issue to leave to the politicians Canada is worth saving we felt but the changes will have to take place soon time is running out Has to pay onethird City councils general com mittee has again voted to charge an Oren Boulevard resi dent onethird of the cost of repairing broken sewer la teral on city property in front of his home The total bill is about $750 and the city and the developer are to pick up the other twothirds of the total Ci ty policy makes sewer laterals the property owners responv sibility regardless of the pro perty line Lawrence Campbell whose sewer backed up in May because of the break has argued that he had no control over sewer construction and should not be charged at all for the work MAL 155519 Tom INFORMATION FOR MY LISTING or The Examiner Handle loBaytield St Coll
