in conference OTTAWA ICP While ina rine industry leaders clashed on such issues as Arctic ship ping this week they laid the groundwork for common action on other important shipping problems The first national conference of shipbuildcrs shipowners la bor leaders and government of ficials concluded Thursday with general agreement that study groups should be set up to develop proposals for govern ment on marine issues The suggestion came from Gordon Sinclair federal marine administrator and it won general conference ap proval Sinclair said later these in dustrywvide groups could generate detailed proposals on such problems as shipping Arc tic gas in liquefied natural gas LNG carriers The Arctic gas issue was the most contentious at the tworday meeting One ship operator said Canadian shipowners might lose chance to handle the Arc tic gas business if they are for ced to begin with Canadian built ships Sinclair conference cochair man said after the conference that the germ of united action by the marine industry was planted One shipowner said as the meeting concluded that it is imr portant for the various shipping associations to work together If they presented united front on
