selfconscious and more asser tive about their culture and mother tongue Thats the observation of Re jeanne GuayGalbraith co ordinator of the Penetang office of LAssociation canadienne francaise de LOntario AC F0 In her view the change has been evident since the opening of French activity center at Simcoe Street in January 1974 Before the centre the assimilation was constant Now people are declaring themselves much moreThey see something concrete to boost their selfrespect as Fran cophones Miss Guay Galbraith says The center funded by grant from the office of the Secretary of State has only one paid employee About 100 volunteers help to keep the various pro grams functioning says Roland Desroches the president and administrator The major involvement of the center has been in cultural ac tivities It has brought French movies entertainers and the atre groups to town and en couraged local productions It sells French records and has stocked jukebox that travels about the area Tl P0 In addition the center had an active part in setting up net work of Frenchlanguage nursery schools in the area There are now four providing instruction for about 100 students two halfdays week are located in Orillia Per insfield Lafontaine and Penetang The centre was set up to serve all of Simcoe County but the activities have been focuss ed on the Penetang area Miss GuayGalbraith says thats because the budget is so tight and the manpower so limited that efforts pretty well have to be confined to the area where there is definite de mand for the services The centres 1916 grant totall ed$7500 We havent really had the chance to develop link with BarrieWe would certainly help them get started if they want French services in Barrie but the impetus should come from within the city Its hard for us to tell our volunteers to go elsewhere when weve got so much to do here One of the centers ongoing activities is to push for the creation of Place Concorde de PenGlen multiuse educa tional recreational and cultural facility pro for the town It is to have bil ingual character serving both the English and French speaking sectors of the popula tion Place Concorde was an idea that originated with the centre in April 1904 Dr William Butts of Toronto has already donated litacre plot of land two miles from Penetang to house the facility Atpplication was recently ma to Wintario for
