It all depends Worth living TORONTO CP The gen eral assembly of the Presby terian Church in Canada meets next week for the 103ml time Like many other denominations the church has financial problems in an in flationary economy and is con cerned about declining mem bership About 260 commissioners made up of an equal number of ministers and elders will at tend the weeklong assembly It opens Sunday night in 101year old St Andrews Church in downtown Toronto and contin ues until Friday June 10 First business is to elect moderator to succeed Rev Lorne Mackay of Hamilton The official nominee is Rev DeCourcy Rayner of Toron to since 1958 editor of The Presbyterian Record the chur ch magazine He is retiring from that post this year An official nominee is chosen by majority ballot of the 44 presbyteries and although nominations may be made from the floor this would be unusual Ihus Dr Rayner is not ex pected to be opposed Eight names were on the ballots Under the laws of the church ble college started church which has flourished and is going concern in the business of helping folks find meaning to life His young glowing face is testimony to the fact thathis life is worth living Yes life is worth living if we live aright And God is available to help all those who purpose to do so God is greater than those powers which mess up our lives greater than the power of alcohol dope and moral looseness He is also greater than the more respectable idols which we set up and which cause our lives to be empty money material possessions and fame He is also greater than those fears and worries which make us miserable girl who had served time in Kingston Penitentiary and was in danger of being labelled habitual criminal by those in authority told me that she did not think that religion could help her It is not religion qulied It is Christ who can help Yes it is Christ the conquering living Christ to whom one day every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord who makes life worth living If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall befree indeed John 838 By DOROTHY KILBURN Is life worth living is question that some people are asking today In my opinion the answer to that is that it all depends on what kind oflifeyou are living Recently was talking to man who had messed up his life by committing adultery He felt like blowing his brains out His life was not worth living woman whose husband was drunk every day talked to me recently sharing the deep despair which had enveloped her As talked to her about the Lord found that her mind was closed to the help that He could give her Her life was not worth living Hollywood star who had gone from one marriage to another confessed that his life was empty and unsatisfying not worth liv mg Recently recieved letter from friend of mine whose husband had been killed in car accident three years ago She had continued her husbands work as an evangelistic preacher and had gone on tour of the Gaspe in Quebec She signed her letter joyfully serving the Lord The tone of her letter con vinced me that there was no doubt that she considered that her life was definitely worth living young man who had Presbyterians SEE DISCRIMINATION resolution from the presby tery of Vancouver Island origi nating with the kirk session of St Andrews Victoria asks the general assembly to change the law which states that the mod erator in all courts of the chur ch must be minister thus preventing competent ruling elder from holding the office This says the resolution is dis crimination The committee on church doctrine is bringing the resolution before the assembly and will argue Ordination is deliberately discriminating for the minis ters are ordained to the minis try of the Word and sacraments and to rule but elders are or dained only to rule It is unfitt ing that they should preside over ministers The general council of the United Church of Canada and the general synod of the Angli can Church of Canada courts equivalent to the Presbyterian general assembly usually meet every two years and some Pres byterians feel biennial meetings Would be good thing for their church The proposal went before the presbyeries for study and re port and the administrative council notes that only three of 21 presbyteries which gave their viewsfavored the idea In recommending that the matter of biennial assemblies be dropped the council is to say there would be an undesi ra 1e delay in the judicial proc ess and that there is fear of giving greater authority to boards and committees in cluding the council and the de velopment of bureaucracy Central United Church Ross Toronto Sts Barrie Ont MINISTERS Rev Donald Jay BABD Rev Evoritt Ashton BABD INVITES YOU TO CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP 1030 am The
