here the rest of Canada wants more than ever to under stand the Quebecois say two Montrealers who have just edited an unusual and wide ranging anthology called Voices FROM Quebec Michael Thomas and Philip Stratford have compiled 214 ages containing 85 selections oohenchCanadian writers The anthology is organized as setits of confrontations be tween the Bench and English politics and protest sports and entertainment love and fan tasy and the past and present The work of 40 translators is included although Stratford lanky professor of English at the University of Montreal did about third of the translations himself Stratford says there is no other book of this kind in Can ada It has to be the best repre sentative work he said Selections include Work by Andre Langevin Roch Carrier MarieClaire Blais Gabrielle Roy and Rejean Ducharme songs by Gilles Vigneault Beau Dommage and Robert Chars lebois theatre ieces by Anto nine Maillet Michel Tremb lay plus poetry photography cartoons women 11 school chil dren four babies seven dogs sundry cats and parrot Progress has almost bypassed leafy sausage shaped Trowlock island though it is within sight of the busy shopping town of Kingston and most of the islands inhabitants would rather have it that way They live contentedly without street lighting roads pubs theatres movies or shops and until fairly recently they were without electricity or running water There was one tap on the island from which they filled gallon cans daily and they filled their bathtubs with water pum ped out of the river Now the islanders have both electricity and water out of tap but there still is no sewage system and they make do with the kind of enclosed toilets used in deluxe motor cruisers The nearest storea fairly comprehensive corner storeis two miles away and the island ers reach it by rowboat punt or flatbottomed chain ferry pro pelled across the 45 feet of wa ter separating them from the mainland The ferry is used chiefly by sparatism its brand of nationalism and the antiSemitism among some separatists Stratford said there is nothing from the Parti Quebecois politicians recently elected but we have the voices feeding them the grass roots ideas expressed by ar tists You couldnt read this book and not make connections he says They are all there One voice from the past is that of Mere Marie de lln carnation an amazing woman who in letter to her son gives an account of the devastation of an earthquake in Quebec City in 1663 ies here but residents happy and take an electric train to their employment in Kingston
