County sports By BILL URRAN Winners of the Barrie and District Senior fastball league last year Bradford Queens are getting ready to defend their Most of last years championship players will be back with the Queens which means the team should again be leading contender The Bradford softballeis beat out Beatrice Foods sponsored Barrie squad in the finals taking the series in four straight games Pitchers Doug Cook who hurled threehit to shutout VlClOly and Nick Pahor who was also brilliant on the mound in stopping the Beatrice squad are expected to be back on the mound Bradfords smooth catcher Jeff Laforte and slugger Frank Perry also are with the team which Bob Fallis and Ernie Dobney have been signing up The players will be sporting new uniforms in white double knit with gold and burgundy trim Currently the Bradford team is tuning up for the annual Victoria Day weekend tournament at the Celery town Rivalry is usually keen in this competition with fast teams from the Metro area among the entries Meantime other teams also ate holding drills to get in shape for the Banie and District league opening Church Mobile Ilomis and Elmvale should be able to make things interesting for all rivals again Barrie Lakeviews won the honors two seasons back with much the same lineup which played for Beatrice last year After winning the league title Bradford Queens went on to reach the finals in ASA playdowns before losing out to Kapuskasiiig Baseball teams getting ready While the South Simcoe baseball circuit will be carrying on with fewer teams competing the IufferinSinic0e league appeals to have much better prospects lresent indications are 11 teams will be returning from last year and two sections are again planned The north group will include New Lowell Lisle Clarksburg lloneywmd and Horning Mills The champion Mansfield team will be back to defend the title won last year and Ivy Rangers will be leading challengers again Alliston Everett Elingrove and Slielburne also will be returning The monopoly of the Orillia Majors in winning the South Siincoe league eight times in 13 years may have discouraged some rival clubs although there are other factors Last year the Majors defeated Creemorc Braves in the finals after beating out Ivy Leafs and Midland Indians in playoffs Creemore won over Collingwood and Beeton If Creemore drops out as now seems likely Collingwood will be signing some of the former Braves and they just could give the Shibuildcrs the needed strength to take the laurels this year Lacrosse players show pro misc It may be few years ahead yet but sport fans are looking forward to the time when Sinicoe County will be able to once again reign supreme iii the game of lacrosse The neighboring city of Urillia has some yowig players of MINOR HOCKEY local talent It is still long step to Canadian championship teams but Orillia teams away back in the mid30s showed it can be done Orillia then was only town of 8000 but in that super era when lacrosse popularity was at its height the Terriers won the Mann cup three exciting years in row With fastpassing and constant running style of play the underrated Terriers swept aside all opposition in 1934 35 and 36 In 1934 the team won 22 out of 23 playoff games in cluding thiee straight over New Westminster Salmon Bellies in the only Mann cup series ever played in Barrie The new Barrie arena was filled to capacity for every game of that standout series The western manager Grum phy Spring had predicted three straight for his team and received taunts across the country when it went the reverse To prove the win was no fluke the Terriers travelled west and defeated British Columbia AllStars at Vancouver three games to one In 1935 Terriers won 40 and lost only six in repeating the championships defeating Richmond Farmers in Vancouver in the finals Then in 1930 they did it again downing Vancouver North Shore Indians in hectic series at Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens in games which drew crowds of 8000 to 10000 specv tators considerably more than the Mann Cup attendances in recent years Superior system of teamplay and condition enabled the Orillia teams to win in that era when the indoor variety of lacrosse was at its peak Players today are trying to regain some of the lustre and skills of the past and with the right coaching and determina tion just might make it As in the 30s it is tough road to reach the top allCanadian championship but with sufficient desire and enthusiasm plus the necissary backing it is far from impossible Ladies golf at Shanty Bay With Thursdays twilight lottenham Bears did not at tend the meeting but informed the executive that they would bcback The league is tentatively set up as an eighfateam grouping with 28gainc schedule ex pected tostart around May 20 There were number of mo tioiis passed at the meeting which have direct bearing on the operation of the league this season One point which the league has now made hard and fast rule is the appointment of coir veners to handle each playoff series Westbrookc said convcner would have helped out during last seasons final between recmoie and rillia Majors which ended on sour note when Creemorc defaulted We have trouble if we dont have convcners and we dont rts the examlnor Saturday May 1977 15 Mm have trouble if we have con veners he said motion amending the Playoff Qualifying Rule was also passed Now player must attend at 50 per cent of his teams games to qualify for the playoffs Last season the minimum number of games player could play and still qualify for the playoffs was three George Ellis coach of the Ivy club was one of the main movers to have the motion passed If guy is going to play in the South Simcoe Baseball League then 50 per cent isnt too much to ask he said The league also voted to refine the Hennessy System this season Pat Hennessy longtime member of the Orillia Majors first introduced the designated hitter ruling to the South Sinicoe League two years ago which last year was altered to allow team to use as many as 18 players in game if he wanted All team had to do was register the nine hitters with the umpire Ile had the option of fielding an entirely different defensive setup Team reprusent at VCS voted to reduce to two the number of designated hitters Beeton was sawarded the an nual AllStar game with Alliston serving as backup in case Beeton decided against entering the league this season It took some coaxing to get execs to return It took some coaxmg but Reg Westbrookc and Davis arnold are still working for the South Siiiicoc Baseball League Westbrookc is heading into his 18th season with the league the crceinorc resident is back as the leagues secretary treasurcr This will be his ltltli year sciying the league Voted back
