pro hockey His performance over past season has attracted interest of scouts By SCOTT IIASKINS Examiner Sports Writer Doug Shedden has one ambition in life to make it bing in professional hockey Id like to make hocke my career he said Ive always wanted to make it Its really the one thing We aimed for in my life With an attitude like that Shedden one of Barries top hockey prospects will probably go high in the annual Junior draft of midch hockey players lhcro have been number of scouts in touch with me and my coach but at this time think its best to keep it secret he said Shuldcn 15 appears to have all the tools to make it in profes sional hockey Hes 511 170 pounds and not afraid to mix it up in the corners like to do some hitting and dont think the centreman should stand in the slot while his wingers are taking all the punishment in the comers he said try to pattern myself after Bobby Clarke of the Philadelphia Flyers Shoddcn isnt particular about who he is drafted by but does have couple of Ircfercnces guess Id Ii to be drafted by Toronto or maybe Ottawa Ihcyrc suppose to be losing few players and from what hear its pretty good place to play hockey Shedden was minor midget this year so any team drafting him has to sign and play him certain amount of time They cant send him down to their Junior affiliate club without his Iwrmission Regardless of what happens in the major Junior draft Wont be playing another year of midget hockey in Barrie Ihcrc have bcc few tier two scouts in touch with me so can always fall back on that he said was ItklIIy happy with my year got 125 points and thats pretty good for minor midget playing against major midget teams got my 50th goal of the year at tho Prescott tournament and so did Graham Giffen Its pretty good to have two guys with 50 goals on one line Sheddens favorHe Doug Shedden is having quite problem deciding who he wants to cheer for in the Na tional Hockey League quarter final series between Toronto and Philadelphia Ivc always chccred for the lcafs but cheer for Ihiladclphio too because of Bobby Clarke he said dont know who to cheer for but guess Toronto Is my favorite pro gcum think the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Association will merge Some of thc salaries have to come down Shedden said Theres no way player like Phil Esposito should be making 32301011 year He might have been worth that at one time but not anymore Other than few minor pro blcms right now its hell of profession to got into Likc most hockcy fans these days Shcddcn is getting little tircd of all the international hockey It was good in 72 and 74 but thcrcs gctting to be too much of it now If wc use our best players we have the best team in the world In thc first couplc of scrics wc didnt use the best playcrs we had and it showed he said Bobby rr was the best tllirlik Ulltil3lu ttlkp lilsi 12 dcfcnccman Shedden said iordic Ilowc and Rocket Richard were pretty good too Someday If everything goes according to schedule people may bc saying the same thing about Doug Shedden KILLSOWN KINI The leopard seal is the only seal that habitually feeds on warmblorxlcd animals killing and eating other seals pcn guins small Co OpMajor MIdget learn that has good chance of being picked up In the draft thInk GIffenhas good chance of being drafted and Bernie Hutz should be picked up next year because hes got one more year of mIdget eligibility left Shedden didnt get his start in hockey in Barrie He credits much of hIs hockey know how to his early years in Wallaceburg where he was born got started there by skating on the lakes during the winter and played two years house league hockey there before mov Ing to Dame he sard ve played about 10 years oforganized hockey most of It In the Barrie Minor Hockey Association GOOD COACHING Shedden has been lucky Hes always had coaches that were wrllrng to help him in areas that he was weak in Lloyd Pearsall coached the minor midgets last year and he taught me hell of lot about the game and Ken Sharpe and Oscar Hickling taught me quite bit about hockey when was in bantam and peewee Gerry Daniels was an allround good guy this year and pretty good coach He helped me with my skating and thats one area really needed some help He was fair with all the players and tried to give each one as much ice time as possible Shedden has been quoted by Barrie paper as saying that the Mid Ontario Junior Hockey League was nothing league The story said that said it was nothing league but thats not true just said that didnt want to play in the Junior league and that it wasnt the league for me Shedden says his recognition started after the game against Sweden and after the Richmond Hill International Hockey Tournament The scouts started taking an interest in me after the Sweden game when got three goals and two assists and after the Rich mond Hill tournament Shedden said won the top scorer down there so guess thats pretty good IT V2 PRICE AT BAYFIELD MAIL APRIL 18 TO
