Life has been series of firsts biggests and bests for Arch Brown since he bought Barries Canadian Tire store in 1963 He was the first owner to in troduce profitsharing into Canadian Tire associate store Last year the store dis tributed $144000 to its 800dd employees under its profit sharing program an amount Brown says is believed to be the largest ever distributed to retail staff on peremployee basis The new Bayfield Mall store which replaced the Dunlop Street location last June is the largest retail store north of Toronto on the basis of square footage And the outlet has achieved the greatest sales penetration in North America among hard goods stores in cities of corn parable size based on percen tage of hardgoltxls sales in the community Business has been tremen dous since the move to the new 13000squarefoot store at Bayfield Street Brown says Key factors in the new outlets success have been am ple parking space and the stores proximity to Highway 400 he says Were pulling cars off the 400 and 26 and 27 Hayfield Street which never came downtown he says And the trade is coming from far wider area than before 01 Dunlop Street Brown says staff members recognized most of their customers Now he says were meeting new friends all the time people we didnt know Records of Barrie store items exchanged at othe anadian Tire outlets because cus tomers change their minds about color and so forth not because they are sold the wrong merchandise Brown says 77 show that customers are corn Barrie Yacht Club near its membership limit Building membership is major goal for many organiza tions as they plan their years activities but the Barrie Yacht Club is an exception The club with about 120 fami ly memberships is already to its limit of 125 says Com modore Len Cowan Reason for the limit is the availability of docking facilities at the groups clubhouse at the foot of Johnson Street Weve gone about as far as we can go putting in slips Mr Cowan says The club expanded its harbor facilities by about 50 per cent last year and now has slips for 55 boats and land storage for 30 more The clubhouse itself has been standing since the club was formed in the early 1950s and the club hopes to replace it eventually but not in 1977 Club members own total of 50odd large boats and about 20 small boats Mr Cowan says with most other members crew ing on the larger boats or plan ning to purchase boats The club runs Saturday race program nearly every weekend from June to Oct and holds monthly lake func tions from May through New Years Eve Other plans include two or threoweek cruise to Georgian Bay via the Severn Canal and sail training program for youthful club members in the 10to14 age bracket Though most such members are children of adult members Mr Cowan says youngsters can join the club on their own for modest cost MODE Carpet Draperies 3w Our carpets veeen spe Growth Canadian Tire in Barrie ing from Coilinw uod Midland Orillia and even Muskoka Not every product line is in creasing its sales for example Brown says any Collingwood resident who wants new bat tery will buy it at Canadian Tire in Collingwood rather than drive to the new store But other lines among the stores 33000 different items have gone up several hundred per cent in sales volume Housewares and sporting goods are among top per formers The latter category is case of the rich getting richer anadian Tire alaready leads Canada in sales of spor ting goods along with hard ware and automotive products Were the worlds largest retailer of hockey Brown says of the company Moving into the new store has not been all rosy The move itself was delayed from April until June which meant $1 million worth of goods had to be transferred during the stores busy season putting wuite train on permanent and tem porary staff lllTER CONTROL Covering all that floor space is challenge for staff members too but Brown says sophisticated computer con trol system for the stores iii ventory due to begin operating in September will free more staff members to wait on customers Finally the stores below ground service department sufa fers from an appreciation gap despite its IT service stalls and its modern electronic equip rntnt At one time customers com plained because they had to gr upstairs to pay their servicr bills Thats been corrected with the aid of pneumatic tubes but Brown says bigger problem is the number of peo ple who dont even know the store has service department lot of people mostly frotn out of town have asked when the store intends to open such department Its very frustrating Brown says on trampled scuffed and un derfoot in many Barrie homes for 10 years now but we love it At Modern Carpet we have been in the business of satisfying your carpet and drapery needs
