service March at the liiitcdthuich The basic civil service pen sion is well funded and carries no taxpayer liability according to federal member of parliament Ross Milne LPeelDufferinSimcoe In news release Milne took issue with the National Citizens Coalition and other groups that have been saying civil servants have very lucrative pension plans which the taxpayers are paying for It is true that civil servants have an excellent pension plan Milne said They should have because they pay more into it during their working years than nearly any other employee group Milne said public service em ployees pay 75 per cent of their salaries to the basic pension plan Because of the higher con tributions and the interest ear ned since the plan was established in 1924 it is one of the soundest pension schemes he said In fact the fund earned over $450 million last year in interest which almost matched em ployee contributions he ad ded There has never been cent of taxpayers money required to subsidize the plan nor will there be any requirement for subsidy in the future The average pension of civil servants is $5100 year after 25 years of work he said But Milne added share the concern of many about the in dexing provision The Citizens Coalition says the two per cent contribution is not enough to finance the pay out if inflation remains high The Public Service Alliance says it is Milne
