16 The Barrie Examiner Wednesday March 16 1977 Sour ending for series By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor The need for proper coaching or the lack of it was never more evident than Tuesday night at the Barrie Arena What was to have been York Simcoe Minor Hockey League juvenile playoff game between the Allan Cook Juveniles of Barrie and Orillia ended abruptly with 958 remaining in the second period Thats the time the Orillia coaches yanked their club off the ice and into the dressing room refusing to return to the ice The game ended on brawling and disorganized note amidst spree of name calling which left the small knot of spectators shaking their heads Some in sheer disgust Barrie was in front at the time with comfortable 50 lead in the second game of bestofthree semifinal Its not the first time something of this nature had happen ed There was game earlier in the season when over 100 minutes in penalties were handed out and the game called due to lack of time Another game witnessed highsticking incident nearly turn into messy and totally uncalled for brush with the law when an Orillia player phoned the police to lay assault charges Cooler heads prevailed in the end What ignited the start of the end was fight between Bar iiii ries Chuck Edwards and Cam Henderson of Orillia It started with wrestling match on the ice which the official couldnt separate and flared again in front of the Barrie dressing room Orillia officials blamed the officiating saying they let the game get out of hand They blasted the pair of referees quite loudly and to some extent after the game Rubbish to that thought Everyone at the arena knew it was going to happen It had happened before with different officials There was total lack of discipline on Orillias part The players had no control and the men behind the bench werent able to give any guidance Orillia has been leaderless for most of the season The men who filled in Tuesdayjust did that filled in This lack of discipline allowed few hotheads to pop off at will The obvious mismatch of talent didnt help The only good thing about the series is that its over and Barrie now is pitted against Richmond Hill for the league championship Glen Laycock and Gus Eyers had two goals each for Bar rie with Edwards scoring the other Terriers on the ropes in series The Flyers swagger into Orillia tonight in command of the bestofseven Ontario Hockey Association semifinals 30 Which is no great surprise The combination of Flyers defence Wayne Carleton and three productive scoring lines is enough to send the Terriers staggering into Lake Couchiching Terriers should pose greater concern than in the 106 lashing delivered by Barrie Monday when the series returns to the confines of the Orillia Community Centre The Terriers are more apt to create more suspenseful game before hometown fans Even pressure the Flyers bit They did it the last time Barrie came to Orillia forcing the Flyers to come back with fourgoal outburst in the final period foraTti win Barring anything short of fullscale collapse Flyers will meet Brantford Alexanders in the league finals That series could start this weekend but Flyers are keeping mum on the subject Its bad luck to talk about series explained Steve Cripps generalmanager of the Flyers hockey club es pecially when one series has yet to be decided No one expects the Terriers to give anything away But few doubt that the Flyers will be out to end the series in as few games as possible Should the series end tonight then its up to Brantford to call the shots for the first game of the bestofseven final series Jim Lemieux of Midland league convener says the Alex anders have the first say in the series as long as they give themselves enough time to finish before specified date They have certain time limit to finish by Lemieux said and that is April There is strong possibility of the series opening in Brant ford Friday should Barrie eliminate Orillia Alexanders will have representation at the game and theyll probably get together with Flyers officials to deter mine the start of the final Allstar selections on Friday The league reached balance of power this year and with it created an interesting situation as to the selection of the Forgrave first and second allstar teams Carl Fletcher of Cambridge the league statistician has the final allstar team lists completed with the exception of the most valuable player award Lemieux contacted the statistician Tuesday and reported back that there was tie for the MVP This will cause another voting The remainder of the selections will be made public Fri day Lemieux said leagues scoring champion ship with his 85 points on 34 goals and 85 assists The Flyers centre is as sured of his second scoring trophy in his four seasons with Barrie Regan 26 goalscoring lead with team ishing 13 points in front of his nearest rivalRuss Elliott of Thunder Bay 215172 Bob Dupuis has to be reckoned with as one of the premiere goaltenders of the league The uckstoppcr with the Whity Warriors played in 21 games giving up 76 goals while recording three shutouts for goals against average of 362 His three shutouts topped theleague PAUL REGAN Dupuis is likely candidate for the firstall star team and the selection of Steve Rexe despite his 624 goals agaonst average with the Lindsay Lancers to the secondallstar squad wouldnt be all that surprising Rexe played in 3125 games giving up 195 goals The selection of the allstars was left to those who know bestthe players coaches and managers Its with interest that we wait to see just who the players picked as the top performers in the league One thing is certain This is the year the Barrie Flyers will lose their dominance overthe allstarballotting ELANCING AROUND The two members of The Ex aminers Team Typo Swim Team surprised everybody with their performance at the Swimathon at the Barrie YM YWCA on Monday Noone expected them to last more than 15 laps
