Regublicans and the Centrists each took six an other tickets favorable to the Gaullist CentristGiscardist majority that controls the National Assembly got eight Two others were won by nonpartisan tickets and one by independents WILL ELECT MAYOR In Paris where the new municipal council will elect mayor for the first time in 106 years the SocialistCommunist ticket won only 40 per cent of the vote But this was no comfort to Giscard dEstaing since ticket of his su porters headed by Industry Minister Michel Ornano ran behind the Gaullist ticket headed by Giscard dEstaings rival for leadership of the centrist and conservative forces former premier Jacques Chirac Chiracs slate got 28 per cent of the vote dOrnanos got 20 per cent and new ecology party received about 10 per cent This eliminated the ecologists from the runoff because they did not get 1212 per cent of the vote In the second round victory will go to the ticket that gets the largest Vote But the lef tists will win Paris also unless dOrnano with draws and Chirac gets enough votes from his supporters and the ecologists HELP LEFTISIS The leftists were helped by continuing in flation and unemployment Chiracs break with Giscard dEstaing which split the con servative vote and the formation of oint SocialistCommunist slates which unit the leftist vote Giscard dEstaings closest political ally Interior Minister Michel Poniatowski tried to minimize the Ieftists victory by pointing out that their vote of about 51 per cent was less than the 53 per cent they got in regional elec tions in 1976 Leftist spokesmen replied that only half of Frances 303 million voters were eligible to vote in the 1976 elections and local issues were the decisive factors then But this com parison was clouded because about 30 per cent of the voters stayed home Sunday It was the biggest abstention since the war Francois Mitterand the Socialist leader said that now Giscard dEstaing must realize the extent of his troubles Communist party chief Georges Marchais said the results demonstrated the deep discontent existing in the count about the disastrous economic and social po icies of Giscard dEstaing The presidents term does not end until 1981 But if the left wins control of National Assembly next year it might be im possible for him to continue to govern At stake in the voting were 475000 councd some totally deaf persons who cannot be helped by conventional hearing aids Dr Robert Schindler of the University of CaliforniaSan Francisco stressed in an interview that widespread use of the devices so far tested only in animals is long way off But he said that the first trial implants in small number of human patients can begin within year or two Conventional hearing aids which merely amplify sound do not help totally deaf persons The implants bypass damaged parts of the car by trans mitting electrical impulses from an external device similar to hearing aid directly to the auditory nerve which carries signals representing the sound from the car to the brain Factory bombers promise more MARLBORO Mass AP More violence has been promised by extremists who bombed factory here partly in may be off again OTTAWA CP Margaret Trudeau is back home againrv at least foratime The 28yearold wife of the prime minister slipped into town Saturday after con troversialand highly publi cized rrweek in Toronto and New York The prime ministers office declined to confirm whether she joined her husband at private dinner Saturday night with British Prime Minister James Callaghan and Mrs Callaghan There has been talk that she will be off again to visit her merits in Vancouver But no yisconfirmingthateither Mrs Trudeau went to loron to on March to attend two rock concerts by the Rolling Stones From there she flew to New York where she stayed at the home of Princess Yasmin Ali Khan and granted three inter views which indicated she is go ing to retire from the public eye and public functions fora time For most of Saturday nobody could be found to say whether she would accompany the Cal laghans to the prime ministers country cottage at Harrington Lake about 15 minutes from Ottawa ARRIVEDHOMIC Finally she arrived here on regular Air Canada flight Two RCMP plainclothesmcn whisked her to car The prime minister told news conference Thursday his wife is cancelling as many of her official engagements as possible to become more of private person think she realizes that when she does things publicly she has to expect to be re ported he said then Perhaps that is why she is cancelling lot of these public engagements Mrs Trudeau told New York Times reporter on Friday Im going to be acting independently Im just going to be working with my photography not shaking han ds and smiling in crowded balls Im tired of that sort of thing She said in another interview that she has unique and fine relationship with her husband and she depends on him But dont depend onand dont needthe role of prime minis terswife In television interview last year the prime minister said this about his sixyear mar riage think weve worked out an arrangement where she does what she wants And at periods in her life it is being very in volved with my political career and another periods its turning her back on it com pletely TIIATS FINE And thats fine with me Its sometimes bit difficult to guess what the particular rules are at the particular time but as soon as theyre clear thats fine He said as soon as his wife wants to have life of her own whether as photographer writer or just Bohemian traveller then she sort of falls into the news and people photo graph her So in sense its when she wants to live her life freely that she no longer is private Its kind of paradoxical In Mrs Trudeaus latest in terview she said think if oplc cannot see what kind situation what kind of life have had to lead for six years if they cant un derstand and appreciate why would choose not to live it any more mean Im not sayin lm notliving with my husban lm not saying Im not being mother to my children but the whole expectation the judg ment the role Im not going to devote my time to that any more Im going to devote my time to other interests That may be selfish but think every woman every human being has right at certain time in their life to be bit selfish Uhr flame Examiner 15 Per Copy
