16 The Barrie Examiner Wednesday March 1977 SRS CORNER end to season By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor For the second straigh out with whimper instead of bang And to the same team The executive of the junior hockey club along with the went wrong For the most part theyre left with the gnawing feeling fourthplace finish and the four straigh round of playoff action to Oak Ridges Im disappointed that we went out so quickly the first week in December Knowles is one of those coaches who dont like to lose Win nine is so much easier to take They lost 65 but it could have gone either way is They proved over the series by far that they were the bet ter team Knowles said They outgunned us 32 feels should win the league and do well in the Ontario playoffs It still does little to soften the disappointment of quick endto the season Perhaps the most exciting game certainly the most emo tional was the season opener in Thornhill way back on Oct No game quite came close to capturing the excitement of Barries seven goalspree which wiped out fourgoal deficit Changing coaches didnt help Knowles agreed to take over coaching duties when the Colts released Don Crowe and Don Martin He entered the junior hockey scene at low point for the Colts They had not won in five games including two losses to the Owen Sound Steelers and were winless in five games The gates were taking kicking as well Up until that los ing string the crowds were fair Colts just never got the peo ple back out following two rather lacklustre games at home There was feeling that the Colts werent reaching thei potential When was brought in they felt they had more ability than what theyd been showing Knowles said Colts were in third place when Knowles took over and finished fourth at the end of the schedule which hurt Barrie Not only did it pit them against Oak Ridges but left the club with little momentum for the playoffs Knowles said the Colts lacked some drive dont know if the will to win was there said Knowles adding that it was partly the coachs responsibility to instill this drive Colts didnt have that extra drive to give little more and work little bit harder hen needed the most Then there were the injuries Barrie got hit hard at crucial time leaving the club anything but spry heading into the Oak Ridges series Colts missed third place by one point even though they had numerous chances to edge out Orillia Travelways Colts could have won third right up to the last game of the season against Midland Flyers but loss allowed Orillia to sneak in Knowles thought the Colts would have given Thornhill decent go which may have primed the club little bit more for the Oak Ridges think overall that we didnt really play up to our poten tial Consistency wejust couldnt get any he said Working behind the bench of junior club was teaming experience for Knowles He said he enjoyed the experience Next year couldnt say right now That decision is up to the Colts executive and Knowles says he has his family to consider On the other hand might like to give it go for com plete year just to see what could do over full year Both Knowles and president of the olts junior organiza tion Bill Hake said Barrie lacked more experience Were disappointed in way that we ended where we did Hake said Maybe its not so good to change coaches in midstream but think it was necessary at the time He said there was little more harmony after Knowles took over Hake stated that he was most unhappy with the fan sup port Hake felt that it wasnt just Barrie that was suffer ing at the gates but in other areas as well think hockey is on little bit of low right nowthe same iii terest is not there The lack of interest and cost of jumping has kept the Colts from moving into Tier Two Junior opera tion Barrie had the chance dropped in their lap last summer and are now thankful that they decided to remain in their own group Collingwotxi Blues moved out and into the Southem junior Hockey League The Blues at that time represented the class of the midOntario Junior Hockey League They had the best crowds in the league the best team and the best chance to make it This year the Blues are strugglr ing to keep their head abow financial drowning and perhaps as suggests Hake regretting leavingthe fold As Hake says theyre paying the price for making the move to get that letterA pinned beside theirorganization The jump allows teams to open the door to imports As it stands now teams in the MidOntario loop can import seven players each season but even this is pretty heavy finan cial drag on club says flake We discussed it among ourselves also with other teams and groups at the OHA and with teams in tier two for financial picture We felt that the way were presently con stitutcd that there was no way we could run Junior club Hake said Later in the discussion he pointed thats not to say that were always going to bc club Colts policy was to use as many local boys possi blenot that we didnt want to win but were trying to help local boys further their hockey explained Hake GLANCING RlDNo coach manager orteam official BILL HARE olts president can give you an opinion as to what theyre going to do next year said Make He did mention that he hoped Knowles would consider returning Veteran players leading scorers Disappointing season the Barrie Colts have gone players and coach have had few days to mull over what that they could have and should have done better than the losses in the first com mented Lorne Knowles who stepped into the coaching shoes Colts came up with one good game against Oak Ridges
