booming WASAGA BEACH Three residents who have big stake in the future of Wasaga Beach agree that the winter sports boom in the last few years has been Godsend Carl Mitchell chamber of commerce manager and hotel owners Greg Dyer and Margaret Hutchinson said businesses which once depend ed solely on the annual summer tourist invasion for their sur vival are now flourishing year round because of the heavy in flux of skiers and snowmobilers duringthe winter months Mr Mitchell former town councillor and real estate salesman said the town caught on to the winter sports boom few years ago and with the help of the provincial government launched major effort to build snowmobile and crosscountry skiingtrails Wasaga Beach now boasts 198 kilometers 124 milest of crosscountry skiing trails in the provincial park located in the Dunes area It also is located in the centre of trunk snowmobile trail built by the province which runs from Bar ric to Wasaga Beach and west to Collingwood As these two activities gained in popularity he said the town started program to promote Wasaga Rcach facilities Mr Mitchell said that before the promotional campaign got underway the only snowmobilers who came to Wasaga Beach were daytrip pers who bought their machines in another centre and carried their own gasoline and lunches They rarely spent any money inthetown But after snowmobilers heard about the towns facilities he said they began to come by the hundreds filling hotel restaurant and gas sta tion cash registers Its been real boost to the economy Mr Mitchell said Margaret Hutchinson owner of the Dyconia Hotel on Mosely Street said her business has been doing welltiiis winter thanks to the heavy snows She said skiers from the C011 ingwood area have been stay ing at her hotel for about 10 years but the winter business really took off about five years ago Before then she said the town was dead as doornail from October to May NIGHT AND DAY Mrs Hutchinson said the dif ference between the volume of winter business 10 years ago and this year is like night and day In those lean years she said the hotel was always digging to for banquets and dinners The Examiner Asks keep the business afloat Were big place so we have to stay open all year she said Weve got lot of money sunkintoit Though the hotel is part of the Blue Mountain Ski Resort reservation system Mrs Hut chinson said she cant always count on brisk business every winter If we havent got any snow we havent got any business she said Its tremendous gamble Three years ago when very little snow fell she said We were starving Greg Dyer who owns the Nancy Villa Hotel said his business has prospered thanks to the winter sports boom but at the moment about half ofhis total capacity for 50 guests is not being used due to renova dons Were having an extremely good winter he said but renovations have taken half my rooms out of commission Crosscountry skiing facilities in town havent helped the hotel business that much Mr Dyer said because Wasaga Beach is close enough to large urban areas that cross country skiers can drive up for the day and drive home the sameday Why did you wait until now to get your licence sticker think we go around flagwaving as much as the Americans do Were little more rcscrv cdwhich think is not bad thing Prime Minister Pierre lrudcau recently accused Canadians of bcin unpatriotic and cynical and blase about the future of their country Speaking to group of Town to high school students Trudeau said Canadians have reatness within their grasp ut only ask What have you done for Canadians may not be eir thusiastic or demonstrative about their country as Americans but that does not mean they are not patriotic said Bob llollywood general mana er of the Greater Barrie Chum cr ofComincrce MOST HAVE SENSE Most Canadians have some sense of patriotism he said it varies from person to per son and from community to community Canada is new country he said the Americans have been around longer and have more people It takes while to build that patriotism up The United States were born of crisis he added and wars and revolutions tend to make countrymen more patriotic Canada is unique it cvolv ed systematically he said and most of its forefathers were too busy working to think of patriotism But when the chips were down we proved ourselves then Mr Hollywood said In the wars wc responded far beyond what people ex pected for little countryand we built the bloody railway he noted Mr Hollywood also question ed to what extent patriotism reflects leadership Winston Churchill and John Kennedy could motivate people they gave them vision Mr Hollywood said You Cant always blame the troops NOl OSTENIAIIOUS Canadian patriotism is not ostentatious said Ald Fred Ruempcr We take our cues for patriotism from the British were more reserved he said Mr Reumpcr also pointed out countries such as the United States and France which have gone through revolutions tend to be more obviously patriotic Ald Alex Arthur said in my judgment Canadians love their country but they could lack some nationalistic zeal Canadians tend to maintain strong ties with the land they or their forefathers came from he added Ald Arthur said he did not believe Canadian couldnt care less about their future They are concerned he said but we dont know what to do about it Norm Hesketh of the Barrie Lions Club said Canadians are patriotic He said he didnt now why he believes so cant think otherwise Mike Hamilton of the Barrie Civitan Club was the only dissenter in the group Mr Hamilton said Canadians lack the natural spirit to be patriotic Whenever the Star Spangled Banner is played the Amer icans react with pride he said When the Canadian national an them is played it is usually the frum iest recording or slow and of keyheadded He suggested contribution to patriotism would be to send the Barrie Arena new recor ding of Oh Canada Tony Lasorda Thornton This is for my mother We
