professional actor and director Norris was the adjudicator at the Georgian Bay Drama Festival for high schools held in Bradford and District High School last week Before giving 14 awards he said the purpose of the festival is to raise the standards of theatrein high schools This will eventually improve the standards in the profes sional theatre he said It doesnt matter how many awards school wins he said The important thing in any high school festival is that the students leave with something more than when they came whether it is about makeup acting or lighting Norris said he has judged number of high school plays in festivals in Canada But he said he never gives best actor or actress award dont like stars he said When you give kid best ac tor award where can he go from there Often the award goes right to his head He also refuses to give awards if the plays do not meet his standards for the theatre At Saturdays awards ban quet for the festival Norris refused to give an award for best lighting or most promising actress in lead He did give awards for most promising actor in lead most promising actor in character role and two awards for most promising actress in character role In high school drama festivals you have to keep in mind the actors theatrical ex perience and life experience and judge accordingly he said Not just acting But not just the acting makes good play he said The total production in cluding sets costumes lighting and even the choice of play is judged The proper choice of the play is very important he said The play should not be too great challenge for the ac tor but it should have goal that with hard work the people are capable of reaching Norris said he rates play us ing the SHE system simplicity honesty and economy These three things are all part ofthe craft he said Before giving the awards Norris gave words of warning to both actors and backstage crews for the productions Those of you who are actors will be absolutely dead unless you have fine backstage crew he said And the backstage crews work will be absolutely nothing unless you have good actors on stage Task forces to study recreation in Barrie Seven minitask forces have been
