at least three hockey games this year Short said Wed have the momentum in games and then just start taking needlesspenalties If the Colts lose their heads against the Derbys tonight it may also lead to major melee Tonights game against the Derbys is the beginning of tough part of the schedule for the Colts Friday they travel to Burl ington next Tuesday theyre in Streetsville they host Burl ington next Thursday and the next Thursday night the Dixie Beehives are in town The latest standings show Burl ington in first place the Derbys in second and the Beehives tied for fifth but just six points out of first Wed be very happy if we can come out of this stretch winning our home games Short said That is no short order and the Colts will have to work very hard to accomplish that goal The Derbys are the defending Sutherland up champions Last year they played fairly clean brand of hockey en route to the title The year before when they lost in the Cup final to the Stratford lulletins they played very rough brand of shinny It would appear they have reverted back to that style Excess penalties bad local hockey man says Penalties discourage Hugh Knowles Especially when it comes to 30 or 40 penalty minutes per team in the York Simcoe second minor midget hockey division As Knowles says thats not hockey Knowles is the publicity representative for Tim Hor ton Minor Midgets Barrie second minor midgets team Bell Canada is the first minor midgets team that plays in the York Simcoe league But because of high costs there are fewer and fewer second teams around And according to Knowles the ones that are around are frustrated in their games against the Barrie club Most of our kids are 15 years old and they are play ing against teams with boys mostly 16 Their kids are lot bigger and stronger that ours But our kids are good skaters and are usually outhustling the other teams Barrie hasnt lost in league play yet Thats when the penaltie start Knowles feels that the big ger kids take out the frustra tions of being beaten by the smaller faster skaters on the Barrie team by playing mugh overpowering them in size and smacking them around As result all of the second Minor midgets games have been filled with penalties The refs cant control them there are 30 to 40 penalty minutes per side and thats not hockey said Knowles Its really deteriorating The boys who play on the team are just cut below those on the first minor midget team But they still want to play hockey However this kind of thing is really discouraging for them and weve had one of our best players quit While Tim Horton coach Bert Quinlan isnt nearly as udamant on the subject as Knowles he does agree that sometime the older bigger boys do become rough and frustrated when they are be ing beaten by smaller team But Quinlan doesnt want to complain If the kids want to play they have to play minor midget says Quinlan We have no other place to play if we wanted to play other teams of 15 year olds we would have to go to Kit chener and thats too much travelling The kids are there and most of them are enjoying playing says Quinlan We are generally playing below ourselves in the league were in and naturally there will be more penalties But this isnt the first time second team has run into this kind of pro blein its been going on for alongtime CENTENNIAL PLYMOUTHCHRYSLER 97 PREWINTER sue I974
