entertainment Editor Stephen Bauer7266537 Simplcity remains key to the work of Pat Hart By STEPHEN iALIth Of The Examiner The Watercolor Society in Toronto refuses to accept her as member although shes developed distinctive style thats highly respected by fellow artists She dislikes the pressure of producing work for show Shes an artist whos taken one of the most popular media and dramatically stret ched its creative possibilities Meet Pat Hart 77 artist teacher and reluctant promoter of her own work Its not that shes modest about her ability as an artist shes very good and she pro bably knows that although shed never come right out and say so Her artistic philosophy coming from women who says she really has no philosophy is one thats in tensely personal try to paint for myself she explained during recent interview in her office at Georgian College But its in credible when someone responses to it every painter paints for that Nothing is more satisfying than someone say ing know what you meant there SEE IT To know what Pat llarts art names you have to see it and that isnt as easy as it should be She keeps low profile in the Barrie area although her work is displayed at the Gallery Craighurst and occasionally finds its way into shows at the Clarkson Hotel Thanks to Leo llgacs owner of the Gallery Craighurst you can see fine example of Mrs Harts work in the front window of the Sterling Trust office on Dunlop Street Its watercolor portrait of an old woman The portrait is something of departure for an artist who can centrates on landscapes but the style is unmistakable strong lines sparse use of col or an ability to convey the essentials of an image With Mrs Hart less is always more Than principle transforms her landscapes particularly the more abstracted ones into dramatic statements of light Blues greens and browns are used to convey the visual elements such as sunlight trees and terrain and the effect is always fascinating and usually very striking Ive always had feeling for watercolor she says The spontaneity suits me best MOVED EAST Mrs Hart grew up in Alberta where she studied art in Calgary and Banff She moved east in 1961 with her husband John and began teaching at Georgian College in 1968 Shes now one of three coordinators in the design arts program and teaches classes in textile design Until last year the Harts liv ed in Toronto Mrs liart restricted her painting to the No apologies summer months but now that she and her husband live in Barrie she plans to paint all year round She dislikes the pressure of producing work for show and says shes not interested in building national reputa tion The word personal sums up much of what she feels about her art My style has evolved and is still evolving she says Its funny question philosophy one thing Ive always liked is the oriental approach that simplicity thats what like the best IMPERIAL CINEMA CENTRE 1233440 You cant turn this mob over to the cops Painting is gut feeling really Something sits in your head for five years and then takes 15 minutes to do its like distillation Youre chasing an intangible thing and not always guaranteed the result Perhaps Mrs Harts land scapes seem very tangilbe they replace picture postcard perspective with something much more powerful and mysterious The source of that mystery is the artists one true secret Words cant describe it but Mrs Hart knows how to use it Her landscapes are proof of that They OUR SECOND FEATURE STUFF Pat Hart shes chasing the intangibles in art and following an artistic philosophy that stresses
